MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Brevard College volleyball team (2-5, 2-3 USAS) fell 3-0 in a USA South Conference road match to West Division preseason favorite Maryville College (9-1, 6-0 USAS) on Tuesday evening in Maryville, Tennessee.

Freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Makenna Parkins led all Tornado attackers with a seven kill output, while fellow freshman setter/right-side hitter Kaitlyn Pressley had five kills on her ledger in addition to a team-high seven assists and four digs. Morgan Graham and Caitlin Hagarty led the defense with nine digs apiece, while Grace Pukas and Graham each dished five assists out. Senior Raley Shirey led all Tornados with a pair of service aces.

Maryville was led by a 14-kill performance from Morgan Smithson, while Meredith Bonee dished 31 assists out. Maggie Mathews and Natalie Watts each logged 11 digs.

The Scots took set number one, 25-12, before 25-12 and 25-18 victories in the final two sets of the match.

Maryville was able to jump out to a quick 10-3 lead on a scoring run capped by a Tyledesley kill. Pressley racked up four kills in the first stanza as the Scots claimed the 13-point set-one win.

Pukas tallied a service ace to open the scoring up in set number two, however, a 14-2 scoring run by the hosts propelled Maryville to the early lead, 14-3. BC rallied, cutting the deficit to a six-point margin, 18-12, behind a flurry of kills from Parkins and Pressley. However, Maryville was able to finish the set with seven-consecutive points to take its second 25-12 set victory consecutively.

Despite a 10-point, 14-4 deficit early, the Tornados pressed on, scoring seven of nine points to cut their deficit to a five-point, 16-11 margin. After four-straight Scot points, BC strung together a trio of points two separate times before the Scots ultimately took the final match-clinching set, 25-18.

Brevard will wrap up its road trip this weekend as the Tornados travel to Macon, Georgia to take on Wesleyan College. The Tornados will face the Wolves in a conference meeting at 5:30 p.m., with a non-conference bout slated for 7:30 p.m. in doubleheader action.
