BC Women’s Tennis Takes Care of Business in Season Finale

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's tennis team (4-4) completed its Spring 2021 season on a three-game winning streak with an impressive 8-1 victory over Pfeiffer (4-6) on Sunday afternoon at the McCoy Tennis Complex.

The match marked the season finale for the Tornados as well as the final collegiate contest for BC's senior class of Mekenzie Bowman, Margaret Correll, and Jen Cox.

To begin Sunday's action, Cox and Correll teamed up for a final time at number one doubles for the Tornados. The senior duo earned an 8-6 win in their match to cap a Brevard sweep in doubles play.

Earlier, Bowman and sophomore Brooke Garland finished off their doubles opponent 8-3 in the number two slot.  BC also won in number three doubles, unopposed.

With an unopposed number six singles win, the Tornados took a comfortable 4-0 lead into the individual action.  Garland continued her winning ways with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 in number four singles to clinch the match for Brevard.

Correll then finished off her collegiate career with a dominant win, a 6-1, 6-0 victory in number five singles.

Sophomore Hamrick Perry defeated Pfeiffer's Sydney Honeycutt 6-1, 6-3 in number two singles to give Brevard its seventh win of the match.

In number one singles, BC sophomore Alli Kogoy faced off against Pfeiffer's Darby Sherrill in the most competitive match of the afternoon.  Kogoy took the first set 6-3, before Sherrill tied the match with a 6-2 win in set two.  The match then went to a tiebreaker as competitors from both sides cheered on their respective teammates.

The tiebreaker seesawed back-and-forth until Kogoy ultimately took the 10-8 victory to cap the match win for the Tornados.

The win gave Brevard its third consecutive victory to finish off the Spring 2021 season.  The win streak began April 11 at Maryville before home wins over Agnes Scott and Pfeiffer, both by identical 8-1 results.  BC also defeated Berea 9-0 to total four team wins on the season.

In USA South Conference play, Brevard finished fourth out of eight teams in the West Division with a 3-2 record in league play.

Individual honors from the conference were handed out to Garland, who was named to the USA South Women's Tennis All-Sportsmanship Team.
