Titles by BC’s Iocovozzi, Kogoy Highlight Successful Battle of the Blue Ridge

SWEET BRIAR, Va. - Brevard College freshmen Sarah Iocovozzi and Allison Kogoy each won singles championships to lead the Tornados Women's Tennis team at the Battle of the Blue Ridge.  The women's tennis event was hosted by Sweet Briar College at the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center in Sweet Briar, Virginia.

Iocovozzi won the Pink Draw singles title with a 6-0, 7-5 victory on Sunday over Jada Lewis of Shenandoah.  Kogoy captured the Green Draw singles championship by defeating Kathleen O'Connell of Catholic with a decisive score of 6-0, 6-2.

Brevard College's Samantha Sepe, the event's top overall seed, advanced to Sunday's semifinals of the Main Draw.  Sepe dropped her semifinal match 6-4, 6-2 to eventual Main Draw Champion Allison Wandling of Sweet Briar.

On the consolation side of the Main Draw, Mary Perry and Jen Cox advanced to an all-Tornados final. Perry defeated her teammate, 8-5 to win the Main Draw consolation.

Meanwhile, Mekenzie Bowman advanced to the Pink Draw consolation final after defeating BC teammate Carmen Boone 8-3 in the semifinals.  Bowman was defeated by Lily Kimble of Shenandoah, 8-5 en route to the runner up finish.

Iocovozzi's path to the Pink Draw Championship began on Saturday with a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) win over Shenandoah's Kimble on Saturday. In her second match of the day, Iocovozzi promptly defeated Bridget Kilkelly of Catholic 6-3, 6-2 to earn a spot in Sunday's final.

Kogoy cruised through Saturday's opening rounds to advance to the Green Draw final. Kogoy blanked Sydney Palmer of Shenandoah 6-0, 6-0 to start her collegiate career. She continued her dominant debut with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Josie Cost of Catholic to advance to the Green Draw Championship.

In doubles play, Kogoy and teammate Brooke Garland advanced to Sunday's Pink Draw final. The Tornado duo defeated a team from Shenandoah 8-5 in round one to set up an all-Brevard semifinal.

Facing off against Bowman and Boone, Kogoy and Garland won a tightly contested match, 8-6 to win the semifinal.  In Sunday's final, the Kogoy and Garland combination fell short to a doubles team from Sweet Briar by the score of 8-1.

After dropping their first-round match, the Tornado doubles combination of Iocovozzi and Perry earned the Pink Draw consolation championship with an 8-2 win over a team from Shenandoah.

In the Doubles Main Draw, Brevard's Sepe and Cox advanced to the semifinals. The Tornado team of Eleanor Flannery and Margaret Correll advanced to the consolation semis.

The Brevard College Women's Tennis team, along with the BC Men's Tennis team, returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. vs. Piedmont at the McCoy Tennis Complex.
