Tornados fall to Wingate in final conference game

WINGATE, N.C. - The Brevard College Women's Lacrosse Team (3-11, 0-8 SAC) dropped its last conference match by a score of 17-5 to Wingate University (11-3, 5-1 SAC) on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Nina Siu (Greensboro, N.C.) anchored Brevard's offense with two goals. Siu also led Brevard in draw controls with six during the game. Victoria Hayes (Freehold, N.J.), Kelly Kearnan (Morrisville, N.C.) and Micaiah Vacchiano (Sebastian, Fla.) each found the net for Brevard. Junior Livia Harrienger (Watertown, N.Y.) was credited with two assists for the Tornados.

Wingate's Shannon O'Neal led the scoring totals for the day, scoring four goals and recording three assists for seven total points. O'Neal also earned three draw controls, caused four turnovers, and scooped up four ground balls. Paulena Dempsey completed the hat trick, scoring three goals.

Brevard's junior goalie Shelby Arsenault (Shallow Lake, Ontario) collected 15 saves in the goal for the Tornados. Arsenault had to keep a hot-shooting Bulldogs team calm, as Wingate outshot Brevard 42-10 on the day.

The Tornados did cause seven Bulldogs' turnovers with Penina Fungalei (Fortworth, Texas) and Kelly Kearnan each causing a pair of turnovers. Brevard scooped up 17 groundballs during the match with Kearnan leading the way with four and Fungalei scooping up three for the blue and white.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the opening five minutes as Casey Roux found Shannon O'Neal for the first points of the day. O'Neal would add her second goal minutes later.

Victoria Hayes scored on a man-up situation to put Brevard on the board and cut Wingate's lead to 3-1. Brevard added its second goal at the 13:43 mark as Liv Harrienger found Nina Siu to put Brevard within two in the first half. Siu would score again minutes later to make the score 5-3, Wingate.

The Bulldogs answered Brevard's threats, going on a 5-0 run to end the first half of play. Wingate led 10-3 at intermission.

In the second half, Kelly Kearnan would score off a pass from Liv Harrienger for Brevard's fourth goal of the day. Kat Harrienger found Micaiah Vacchiano for the Tornados' final goal at the 10:35 mark.

Brevard will close out the 2017 season on Wednesday, April 19, against Lees-McRae. The Tornados will travel to Banner Elk, N.C. for a competition beginning at 4 p.m.
