Siu and Harrienger sisters lead Tornados to 17-3 win over Montreat

BREVARD, N.C. - Aided by a four-goal, five assist performance by junior Nina Siu (Greensboro, N.C.) and eight assists from junior Livia Harrienger (Watertown, N.Y.) the Brevard College Tornados (3-10) rolled to a 17-3 win over the Montreat College Cavaliers (0-15) Thursday evening in Brevard, N.C.

Siu's four-goal effort led all scores for the evening, while her five assists, finished second for the game and on the team as Livia Harrienger led all players with eight. In addition to the stellar play of Siu and Harrienger, five other Tornados posted two goals apiece, while nine blue and white members scored on the evening. As junior Kat Harrienger (Watertown, N.Y.), Victoria Hayes (Freehold, N.J.), Livia Harrienger, junior Kelly Kearnan (Morrisville, N.C.) and freshman Micaiah Vacchiano (Sebastian, Fla.) all scored two-goals.

For the Cavaliers, Katherine Harper, Miranda Walker and Amber Hill scored goals, while Hill finished with a team-high five shots.

Junior goalie Shelby Arsenault (Shallow Lake, Ontario) played well between the pipes for the blue and white, allowing just three goals, while stopping 12 shot attempts for the contest.

Brevard finished the evening with a 33-16 shot advantage, 32-22 on ground balls and 15-18 on clear attempts for the event.

The Tornados came out on fire to begin the contest, Thursday, scoring seven unanswered goals, aided by two goals by Vacchiano and Kearnan, while Siu added four assists over the first 16-minutes of action.

Montreat got on the board at the 13:12 mark on an unassisted goal by Hill, trimming the Tornados lead to six-goals at 7-1.

Kat Harrienger answered for Brevard with two goals over the final 12-minutes to give Brevard a 9-1 edge heading into halftime.

During halftime the Tornados took the opportunity to acknowledge three members of the team who will all be graduating early, as part of 2017 senior day festivities. As juniors Brittany Fisk (Waterloo, N.Y.) and both Harrienger sisters will all graduate from Brevard College either this coming May or next December.

Following halftime, Brevard added eight unanswered goals to start the second half, as Siu netted her, 29,30 and 31 goals of the year. While freshman Jezika Gunter (Wake Forest, N.C.) and sophomore Hunter Denney (Pisgah Forest, N.C.) both scored their first collegiate goals on man-up opportunities.

The Cavaliers scored two goals in the final five-minutes of play to trim the Tornados lead to 17-3, but Brevard held on for their third win of the 2017 season.

Brevard will close out the remainder of the season on the road as they travel to Wingate, N.C. Apr. 15 for their final South Atlantic Conference showdown with the Wingate Bulldogs at noon, before closing the season in Banner Elk, N.C., Apr. 19 with a 4 p.m. meeting with the Lees-McRae Bobcats.
