Tornados drop conference match to Catawba

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Women's lacrosse team (2-10, 0-7 SAC) fell to the Indians of Catawba College (10-4, 3-3 SAC) by a score of 19-6 in Saturday afternoon's conference match.

Nina Siu (Greensboro, N.C.) scored half of the Tornados goals, scoring three. The junior also dished out two assists. Siu currently sits at second in the South Atlantic Conference standings in assists with 34 total, and third in the league in points with 61.

Junior Kat Harrienger (Watertown, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals for the blue and white, and junior Kelly Kearnan (Morrisville, N.C.) added a goal to the Tornados tally. Junior Livia Harrienger (Watertown, N.Y.) dished out a pair of assists during the game as well.

The Indians were led by Kirstyn Kruse, who scored four goals throughout the match. Kruse finished with three assists and led Catawba in shot attempts with seven. Crista Clayton and Nicolette Salay each completed the hat trick with three goals apiece.

Tornado's junior goalie Shelby Arsenault (Shallow Lake, Ontario) suffered the loss for the Tornados, playing all 60 minutes in goal. Arsenault collected 15 saves against the Indians. The junior currently sits at second in the conference with 142 saves. Brevard's defense forced six Indian turnovers with Brittany Fisk (Waterloo, N.Y.) and Micaiah Vacchiano (Sebastian, Fla.) each forcing a pair.

Catawba got out to a fast start scoring four straight goals before Nina Siu scored back-to-back goals to cut the score in half at 4-2.

The Indians tacked on three goals. Kelly Kearnan scored at the 11-minute mark off a pass from Siu. Livia Harrienger found Siu two minutes later for Brevard's fourth goal of the day. Livia Harrienger found Kat Harrienger with three minutes remaining in the first 30 minutes of play to cut the score in half, 10-5.

Catawba scored a goal in the final second of the half to enter with a 14-5 advantage. The Indians did not let up in the second half scoring three goals in the opening ten minutes. Kat Harrienger scored Brevard's final goal of the day off a pass from Siu.

Sunday's game wrapped up Brevard's home conference play. The Tornados will host Montreat on Thursday at 6 p.m. for their final home game of the season.
