Tornados storm past Huntingdon

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Women's Lacrosse team (1-3) defeated Huntingdon College (0-4) by a score of 14-7 on Saturday afternoon in a nonconference matchup. Nina Siu (Greensboro, N.C.) and Micaiah Vacchiano (Sebastian, Fla.) scored four goals each for the blue and white to help lead to the Tornados first win of the season.

Juniors Victoria Hayes (Freehold, N.J.) and Kelly Kearnan (Morrisville, N.C.) completed the hat trick with three goals each. Siu had four assists during the game as well for Brevard. Junior goalie Shelby Arsenault (Shallow Lake, Ontario) had a big day in goal for the Tornados, holding Huntingdon to seven goals while coming away with seven saves.

Victoria Hayes put the Tornados on the board first in the opening minute of the game, scoring on a free position shot. The Hawks would answer with a goal on the next possession. Brevard went on a run, scoring the next four goals courtesy of Siu and Vacchiano. Krupa scored her second goal of the day with ten minutes remaining in the half to make the score 5-2.

Siu added her fourth goal in the final minute of the first half to give the Tornados a 7-3 advantage going into the second 30 minutes of play. Brevard did not let up coming out of the half scoring the first two goals by Hayes and Kearnan. Madison Rackley added a goal for the Hawks on a man-up opportunity to cut the score to 10-5.

Brevard answered back scoring four goals to increase its lead to 14-5. The Hawks tacked on two more goals to close out the game to make the final score 14-7.

The Tornados defense had a solid day causing 19 turnovers for the Hawks. Penina Fungalei (Fortworth, Texas) and Brittany Fisk (Waterloo, N.Y.) had three caused turnovers each, while Kearnan forced four turnovers.

Brevard will look to take the momentum from Saturday's win into Tuesday's nonconference matchup against Walsh. The Tornados will host the nonconference opponent of March 7, at noon.
