Tornados drop season opener against Methodist 10-8

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Junior Nina Siu (Greensboro, N.C.) posted a team-high three goals and one assist as the Brevard College Tornados (0-1) dropped their 2017 opener by a close 10-8 final on the road to Methodist University Monarchs (1-0) Saturday afternoon.

In addition to Siu's outburst, the Tornados finished with five other players recording at least one goal as juniors Kat Harriener (Watertown, N.Y.), Victoria Hayes (Freehold, N.J.) Brittany Fisk (Waterloo, N.Y.) and Livia Harrienger (Watertown, N.Y.) all posted goals. While freshman Micaiah Vacchiano (Sebastian, Fla.) recorded the first goal of her collegiate career.

Junior goalie Shelby Arsenault (Shallow Lake, Ontario) picked up the loss for the Tornados, despite racking up a game-high 15 saves on the afternoon.

For the Monarchs, Madison Ronelli finished with a game-high four goals, while Emily Brennen and Bianca Terenzi each posted two goals apiece.

Kat Harrienger would put the Tornados on the board five minutes into the match on a Siu pass to give the blue and while a 1-0 advantage.

Methodist used a goal just over 20 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1, and another goal at 19:31 to take a 2-1 edge over the Tornados.

Livia Harrienger tied the match at 2-2 with 16:56 on a free position shot, however the Monarchs rolled off a 5-1 run heading into halftime to take a 7-3 lead at the break.

Methodist would add a goal early in the second half on a Monti Hendrix score, before Siu would get in on the scoring action, firing home here first of three second half scores with 22:23 remaining in regulation.

However, Methodist would answer Siu's score at the 20:12 mark and again at 19:39 to take a 10-4 advantage with time winding down in the second half.

The Tornados would not go quietly, as Siu netted her second score with 15:42 remaining, before Vacchiano made her impact felt at 12:02.

Siu scored her third and final goal with 9:02 remaining to help give the Tornados three unanswered goals and cut the Monarchs score to 10-7.

Fisk's man-up goal with 3:20 left in regulation was the games final score of the afternoon, as Methodist goalies, Emily Ewin and Jannelle Gant combined for three saves to help preserve the Monarchs 10-8 decision.

Brevard is set to return back to action Feb. 18th as they host Emmanuel from the Brevard Soccer Field, with first draw set for 1 p.m.
