Tornados Trek to Berea, Covenant

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard softball team returns to action this weekend, after finishing 3-3 at the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. on March 7-9, when it heads Berea and Covenant for a pair of doubleheaders.

Brevard will take a two-game winning streak into the weekend after posting a 9-7 win over Mary Washington (March 9) and a 7-6 victory against Penn State-Abington (March 9) in the final day of action.

Paige Atkison and Jordan Hawk lead the way for the Tornado offense with six RBI, while Teegan Bullock owns the team lead in hits (nine). Bullock, who is 9-of-16 from the plate, is posting the team's best batting average among those with at least five at-bats.

Ricki Kuhn is tops among Brevard pitchers with a 2-2 record and a 2.58 ERA in five appearances. Kuhn has recorded a team-high eight strikeouts.

Brevard opens the weekend with a clash against Berea on Friday, March 16 with a series of games at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Mountaineers are 2-10 on the season and are in the midst of an eight-game losing streak that dates back to an 8-4 setback against Asbury University on Feb. 20.

Kourtney Parker leads the way for the Berea lineup in four major statistical categories including batting average (.405), hits (15) and at-bats (37), owning a .541 slugging percentage and .436 on-base percentage. The top pitcher on the Mountaineers' staff is Jacqui Howard (2-8), who has made 16 strikeouts, allowed 76 earned runs and logged 56 innings in 11 appearances.

The road trip continues on Saturday, March 17, when the Tornados play at Covenant at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Scots (12-14), who open the weekend with a series against Maryville, are 5-1 at home heading into Friday afternoon.

Shade Epes leads all Covenant hitters with a .342 batting average, connection on 26 hits in 76 at-bats. Teammates Shannon Schmitt and Shelby Ralston led the way for the Scots' lineup with 11 RBI.

Covenant has collected 29 extra-base hits on the season, including 27 doubles, led by Carlin Labuzan and Faith Manning, who have six each.
