WINGATE, N.C. - The Brevard College Softball team (2-16, 0-10 SAC) was held to just two hits on the day against Wingate University (21-15, 8-2 SAC) in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader.
The Bulldogs posted 16 runs in game one, behind a strong pitching performance by Rachel Weidner to win 16-0. Brevard was shutout again in game two, falling 8-0 in five innings.
Game one: Wingate 16 - Brevard 0
Rachel Weidner tossed five innings allowing just one hit, striking out 11 and walking three Tornados to lead her team to 16-0 win in game one.
Amber Hong (Graniteville, S.C.) was credited with the Tornados only hit of the day with a single up the middle to lead off the second inning. Sophomore Ricki Kuhn (Newton, N.C.) followed with a walk in the inning, but the Bulldogs were able to get out of the jam with three back-to-back strikeouts.
Wingate got things going in the bottom of the first inning with six runs on five hits. Taylor Wells delivered a grand slam over the left field fence to make the score 6-0. The Bulldogs scored in every inning of the game. Sophomore pitcher Ricki Kuhn suffered the loss, throwing three innings allowing ten runs on nine hits. Seven of the runs were earned. Kuhn did strike out three Bulldogs. Lauren Parker (Charlotte, N.C.) came on to throw the fourth inning, surrendering six runs on six hits.
Game two: Wingate 8 - Brevard 0
The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the first as Naomi Sapp led off with an infield single and would come around to score on an error for the games first run. Ricki Kuhn came back to pitch game two throwing a one-two-three inning in the bottom of the second against Wingate. Kuhn threw all five innings allowing 11 hits and eight runs. Kuhn had the Tornados only hit in game two with a single down the left field line.
Wingate sealed the win in the bottom of the fifth as Taylor Wells drove in the games final run with a single to left field. Bulldogs pitcher Aubrey Reep earned the win in the circle, throwing all five innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven.
The Tornados will have a few days off to prepare for a conference trip to Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday April 5, at 2 and 4 p.m.
