Tornados drop conference doubleheader to Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - The Brevard College softball team (2-14, 0-6 SAC) dropped a pair of games to a hot Carson-Newman team (27-7, 8-0 SAC) on Monday afternoon.

Brevard did not fair well against the Eagles, who remain unbeaten in conference play, falling to C-N 9-1 in game one and 23-1 in game two.

Game one: Carson-Newman 9 - Brevard 1

Ashleigh Ivey (Concord, N.C.) recorded Brevard's only hit in game one, with a single to right field in the top of the first.

The Eagles reached the board in the second inning busting out seven runs on seven hits. Taylor Scott delivered a two-out three-run homerun over the leftfield fence to give the Eagles a seven run lead.

Brevard's only run came in the top of the third as Maggie Weiss (Clemmons, N.C.) reached base. Lauren Parker (Charlotte, N.C.) moved her over on the next at-bat. Brittan Miller (James Island, S.C.) reached first on a walk. Ashleigh Ivey brought in Weiss by reaching on a fielders choice.

Carson-Newman's Katie Pritchett drove in the winning run with a single to left center in the bottom of the fifth to help the Eagles earn the run-rule win.

Lacie Rinus earned the win in the circle, tossing five innings allowing one hit and striking out eight. Ricki Kuhn (Newton, N.C.) suffered the loss allowing nine runs on ten hits and striking out one batter.

Game two: Carson Newman 23 - Brevard 1

The Eagles kept the momentum going in game two, with fifteen hits. The Tornados strung together six hits throughout the game.

Brevard got on the board in the top of the first inning as Lauren Parker led off with a double down the left field line. Brittan Miller laid down the sacrifice bunt, and Parker made it to third. Ashleigh Ivey hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in the games first run.

The Eagles answered in the bottom of the inning as Kristen Toppel hit a two run homerun to leftfield to make the score 2-1. The Eagles tacked on another run in the inning. Rhy Hadden (Sterling Ill.) hit a double in the top of the second but was unable to score.

Carson-Newman recorded nine runs in the bottom of the second and eight more runs in the third.

Brevard strung together two hits in the top of the fourth as Ricki Kuhn singled to left field. Katlin Burns singled to right field, but were left stranded. Allison Webster earned the win, throwing four innings, surrendering five hits and striking out five. Heather Foreman came on to toss the final inning. Ricki Kuhn suffered the loss, surrendering 12 hits and giving up six earned runs. Lauren Parker came on in relief in the second tossing an inning, giving up 11 runs.

Brevard will be on the road this weekend as they travel to Wingate for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 1, at 1 and 3 p.m.
