Pioneers pitching quiets Brevard's bats

GREENEVILLE, TENN. - The Brevard College Softball team (2-10, 0-4 SAC) fell on the road in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader against Tusculum College (16-14, 2-2 SAC).

The Pioneers took game one in five innings, winning 11-1. Tusculum pitcher, Eliza Davis shut out the Tornados in game two, throwing a complete game shutout, surrendering four hits and striking out eight batters to help the Pioneers to a 5-0 win.

Game one: Tusculum 11 - Brevard 1

Tusculum reached the board in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Emily Hester singled up the middle to score Sammie West who had singled to lead off the game. The next at-bat Taylor Johnson blasted a two-run homerun over left field to give the Pioneers the early lead.

Pioneers' pitcher Taylor Plemons kept Brevard off balance threw two innings. Brevard's bats heated up in the top of the third inning as Amber Hong (Graniteville, S.C.) led off with a double to left field. Freshman Chloe Quick (Hartsville, S.C.) reached base on a bunt that sent Hong to third. Lauren Parker (Charlotte, N.C.) loaded the bases up with a single to third base. Ashleigh Ivey (Concord, N.C.) was credited with the RBI, after the senior was hit by a pitch to send Hong home for the Tornados only run of the game.

Tusculum scored in every inning of game one, adding five runs in the fourth to win game one 11-1. Taylor Plemons earned the win, scattering five hits threw five innings of work and striking out two. Sophomore pitcher Ricki Kuhn (Newton, N.C.) suffered the loss, tossing three innings. Kuhn gave up nine runs, seven of those being earned runs. Lauren Parker threw the final inning.

Game two: Tusculum 5 - Brevard 0

Pioneer's pitcher Eliza Davis silenced the Brevard bats in game two. Davis threw all seven innings allowing four hits and striking out eight batters. Ricki Kuhn came back strong for game two, tossing six innings surrendering five runs on five hits. Only one of the Pioneer's runs was earned in game two as errors plagued Brevard throughout the game.

The Pioneers reached the board in the bottom of the first as Emily Hester hit a sacrifice fly to score Sammie West for the games first run and the eventual winning run.

Brevard strung together two hits in the top of the third, as Brittan Miller (James Island, S.C.) sent a single to right field to start a two-out rally. Ashleigh Ivey reached the bag on a defensive miscue, and Rhy Hadden (Sterling Ill.) had an infield single to load the bases. However, Brevard was unable to come away with a run during the rally.

The Pioneers tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, and added a run in the fourth and fifth inning to win the game 5-0.

The Tornados will return home on Saturday for a conference double header against the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne. The first pitch will be thrown at 2 p.m with game two following.
