Tornados fall to Montreat

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Softball team (1-3) fell in both games to the Cavaliers of Montreat College (3-13). Game one consisted of 29 hits between both teams, as Brevard fell 12-8. Game two was close, but Montreat edged out the Tornados by a score of 4-3.

Game 1: Montreat 12 - Brevard 8

The Cavaliers got on the board quickly in the first inning as Aly Woody hit an in-the-park home run to right field, to give Montreat the early lead. The Cavaliers would tack on five more runs in the top of the first for the early 6-0 lead.

Brevard would jump right back in the bottom of the first. Junior Brittan Miller (James Island, S.C.) started things off with a single to left center. Rhyanna Hadden (Sterling, Ill.) followed with a blast down the left field line. Senior Ashleigh Ivey drove in Miller and Hadden to put Brevard on the board with one out. Freshman Montana Daniels (Claremont, N.C.) drilled a double to score Amber Hong (Graniteville, S.C.). Pitcher Ricki Kuhn (Newton, N.C.) helped her cause by scoring Ivey. Katlin Burns (Lawndale, N.C.) would triple to right center to score Daniels, as Brevard scored five runs in the inning.

Montreat added three more runs in the second. The Tornados would bounce back, as Brittan Miller tripled in the bottom of the second. Hadden would send the ball up the middle to drive in Miller.

The Tornados started a rally in the fifth as Kuhn hit her own in-the-park homerun to right field. Burns would blast a double down the right field line. Lauren Parker (Charlotte, N.C.) sent the ball to left field to drive in Burns.

Brevard was unable to score any more runs as Veronica Ellis earned the win for the Cavaliers, while Ricki Kuhn earned the loss for the Tornados. The Tornados recorded 14 hits with Miller and Burns leading the way with three each.

Game 2: Montreat 4 - Brevard 3

The Tornados struck first in game two, as Lauren Parker led off with a double down the left field line. Rhy Hadden would bring Parker in with a sacrifice bunt, to give the Tornados the early 1-0 lead.

Brevard added another run in the bottom of the third inning as Daniels hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Miller from third.

Montreat would do damage in the top of the fifth scoring four runs. Aly Woody would deliver the eventual game-winning hit with a double to right center, scoring Mikki Shelton and Karley Yeager.

The Tornados would answer in the bottom of the inning with a run, as Daniels delivered a triple to left center to score Hadden from second. Brevard was unable to get another run, as Montreat's Josie Harris finished the final two innings of the game unscathed to earn the win. Harris went the distance giving up six hits and three earned runs. Kuhn pitched all seven innings of game two, surrendering four runs on seven hits while striking out two.

Brevard will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Young Harris, Ga this weekend for a tournament. The Tornados will take on Georgia College on Saturday afternoon at 4:30, and then battle the host team, Young Harris on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
