Softball splits with Bluefield College on opening day

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team (1-1) split with Bluefield College (5-1), falling in game one 6-2 and winning game two 7-2 on opening day.

The Tornados recorded 21 hits on the day. Senior Lauren Parker (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Tornados with five hits, while freshman Rhyanna Hadden (Sterling, Ill.) finished with two hits and three RBIs. Rikki Kuhn (Newton, N.C.) picked up the win in game two, tossing a gem. The Sophomore allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two and only surrendering one walk. Kuhn pitched all thirteen innings for the blue and white.

Game 1: Bluefield 6 - Brevard 2

The Rams got out to a hot start in the first inning of game one, scoring four runs. The leadoff batter, Cher Jamison led with a single up the middle, and Kate Pennington followed with a single to left. Mary Blake Avery would deliver a one-out double to drive in Bluefield's first two runs.

Tornado pitcher Rikki Kuhn would get out of the inning with a strikeout looking and a ground out to third base. Lauren Parker singled in her first at-bat of the year, as the speedy lefty delivered an infield hit in the bottom of the first.

Brevard answered back in the bottom of the third inning as Brittan Miller (James Island, S.C.) knocked a triple down to right field, scoring Parker for the Tornados' first run of the game. The next at bat, Rhy Hadden would single to left field scoring Miller, to cut the score to 4-2.

Bluefield tagged on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning as Kate Pennington delivered a one-out double scoring two runs for the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher Rikki Kuhn would get through the next three innings unscathed, but the Tornados were not able to score any more runs, falling to Bluefield 6-2.

Game 2: Brevard 7 - Bluefield 2

Game two was all Brevard, as the Tornados busted out seven runs on 12 hits. Kuhn would pick up her first win of the season, and Ram's pitcher Daelyn Hedger was credited with the loss in game two.

Brevard wasted little time getting things going, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Lauren Parker started the run with a leadoff single. Brittan Miller followed, reaching first with a bunt single. Rhy Hadden ripped a two-run double down the left field line to score Miller and Parker. Amber Hong (Graniteville, S.C.) drove in Hadden with a triple to right center. Rikki Kuhn then delivered with her bat, with a single to left field to score Hong.

The Tornados added two more runs in the second inning, as they returned to the top of the lineup, with Parker hitting another infield single. Hadden collected her third RBI of the day as she singled up the middle to score Parker. Ashleigh Ivey (Concord, N.C.) would drive in Hadden with a double down the left field line.

Bluefield tagged on a run in the third inning as Cher Jamison tripled to right field. Katie Pennington would deliver a sacrifice fly to score the run.

Ivey scored the Tornados final run of the game, as she blasted a one-out triple to center field. Montana Daniels would do the same thing the next at bat, sending a ball deep to right center to score Ivey.

The Rams added one more run in the sixth inning, as Kate Pennington led off with a triple. Kiki Murphy would bring her in, as she grounded out to shortstop. The game was called after the top of the sixth, due to darkness. Brevard picked up its first win of the season 7-2.

The Tornados will return to the turf on Thursday, as they host Montreat College in a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m.
