Lowe hires Karavin Dew for assistant coaching position

BREVARD, N.C. - Head softball coach Bob Lowe has announced the hiring of former Western Kentucky catcher Karavin Dew to an assistant coaching position.

"Karavin has been an assistant coach at the high school level and been at the travel ball level for a number of years, including with some premier programs," said head coach Bob Lowe. "I'm looking forward to having her expertise on our staff."

Since graduating from Western Kentucky in 2013, the Calhoun, Georgia native has served in assistant coaching roles at two high schools, including a successful tenure with Dalton High School in north Georgia that saw the Catamounts make their first-ever Elite Eight appearance and set school records for highest batting average and with four All-Region selections.

Dew has also worked with two travel teams, including one head coaching position, and has been a personal instructor for 14 Division I players.

"She's played on turf before," continued Lowe. "With our new field coming in, it's going to be very important for our kids to understand that we have to build our team for the future around speed. Not just power, but speed as well. She understands that."

Appearing in 173 games with 150 starts for the Lady Toppers, Dew earned two first team all-Sun Belt Conference selections and set a school record with five triples during her sophomore season in 2011. She ranks second in school history with 32 runners caught stealing and is third with 735 putouts. Her 14 runners caught stealing as a junior ranks fifth in single-season history, and she holds school records for most triples (2) and most sacrifice flies (2) in a single game.

"I'm very excited to be here," said Dew. "I can't wait to work with the girls, develop their skills, and help give them a great collegiate experience."

She was named to the Sun Belt Honor Roll during all four years at Western Kentucky and was a three-time Dean's List member. Dew graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.
