Five Tornados Named to 2016 ITA All-Academic Teams

BREVARD, N.C. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association recognized its All-Academic Team award winners recently, which included the Brevard men's tennis team. The distinction goes to those who managed a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2016 and spring 2017).

The ITA also honored individual student athletes, who maintained at least a 3.5 GPA, which included five Brevard College student athletes. They included three from the men's tennis program (JR Davis, Tim Hengst, Chris Plasa) and two from the women's team (Kelsey Kushner and Sam Miranda).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: be a varsity letter winner; have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year; and be enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).

Hengst completed the 2016-17 academic year with a 3.909 GPA. A business major, his season on the courts were highlighted by singles victories over Salem International, Lees-McCrae and Southern Wesleyan University. On the doubles side he posted victories against Lees-McCrae, Salem International, and Spring Arbor.

Davis, a chemistry major, wrapped up his freshman season at Brevard with a 3.667 GPA. On the court he posted singles victories versus Lawrence Technological University, Salem International, Spring Arbor and Lees-McCrae. On the doubles side he earned wins over Southern Wesleyan, Lees-McCrae, Carson-Newman and Tusculum College.

Plasa, who earned his degree in business and psychology, had a 3.587 GPA in his senior season. His final campaign was highlighted by wins against Salem International, Spring Arbor and Newberry, which came on senior day.

Kushner, a criminology and pre-law major, completed her freshman year at Brevard with a 3.978. On the court she enjoyed a key singles and doubles victory over Salem International.

Miranda, mathematics major who completed her junior season with a 3.889 GPA, came away with a victory in both singles and doubles over Salem International.
