Tennis rolls to 7-2 win over Lees-McRae

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Men's Tennis team (2-6) picked up their first win of the spring and second victory of the season Tuesday afternoon in Brevard, N.C. rolling over Lees-McRae Bobcats (1-4) by a final of 7-2.

Despite singles action being rained out Saturday, the Tornados were able to control a 2-1 doubles edge heading into Tuesday's non-conference bout. Following a loss by freshman Cre Still (Hendersonville, N.C.) and freshman Will Christiansen (Crawford, Mass.) and No. 2 doubles, Brevard would roll off back-to-back victories as sophomore Tom Mittring (Bavaria, Germany) and freshman JR Davis (Hixon, Tenn.) pulled off a decisive 9-8 point, winning a 7-4 tie breaker. At No. 3 doubles senior Christoph Plasa (Wegberg, Germany) and sophomore Tim Hengst (Menden, Germany) put the Tornados in the lead with an 8-5 win.

In singles action Tuesday afternoon, Brevard would not miss a beat as Hengst would put Brevard up 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Grant Miller at No. 4 singles, while Plasa would fall 6-3, 6-2 to Cole Douglas-Fields pulling LMC within one of the Tornados at 3-2.

However, Brevard would get back on the board at No. 1 singles as Still defeated Gabriel Muniz 6-2, 7-6 and Mittring beat Garrett Lakey 6-3, 6-2 to put the Tornados in the driver seat 5-2.

Brevard would add two more wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles as Davis beat Sebastian Zuhr 7-6, 6-4, while Christiansen came back to beat Thomas Deeley, down 1-0 after a 6-3 opening set loss to take set two and three 6-2, 6-3.

The Tornados will look to continue their success this coming Thursday, Feb. 23 as they host the Tusculum Pioneers with doubles action schedule to get underway at 2:30 p.m.
