Tornados drop hard fought 13-12 contest to Pride

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomore Jackson McKaig (Gainesville, Fla.) and senior Ryan Taylor (Mill Bay, British Columbia) impressed Wednesday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C., as the pair poured in four goals and two assists apiece, in a hard fought 13-12 loss to the Greensboro College Pride (3-11), dropping the Brevard College Tornados to 2-10 on the season.

Wednesday marked the second consecutive time the Tornados have fallen by three or fewer goals and the fifth time overall on the year that the blue and white has experienced a tough draw.

Both McKaig and Taylor finished with two-thirds of the Tornados scoring attack with eight goals, while their four assists enabled the pair to be involved on every blue and white score. Senior Mathew Dropuljic (Brampton, Ontario) added three goals and one assist, while fellow senior Alex Bazzell (Framingham, Mass.) accounted for Brevard's remaining goal.

For the Pride, Kyle Dahlin equaled McKaig and Taylor's goal production with four, while Davis Miller, Daniel Wolf and Michael Sehlhorst each added a pair of goals for the game.

Sophomore Harrison Roberts (Columbia, S.C.) impressed in the faceoff role for the Tornados as the sophomore collected 15-29 faceoff wins and picking up two ground balls.

Sophomore Peyton Mooney (Vaughan, Ontario) played the entire 60-minutes in goal for the Torandos, allowing 13 goals, while collecting 12 saves in the loss.

Greensboro goalie Chris DiBlasi nearly equaled Mooney's save total, as the netminders 10 saves proved to be the difference in the match.

The Pride opened the afternoons scoring at the eight-minute mark of the first quarter when Dahlin fired home his first of four scores on the day.

Brevard answered just over three-minutes later when Bazzell tied the game 1-1 on an unassisted scoring play. Dropuljic connected on his first of three scores with 14 seconds remaining to give the Tornados a 2-1 lead heading into the second quarter.

Greensboro used three scores over the span of four minutes in the second quarter to regain the lead at 4-2. However, the Tornados capitalized on a goal from Taylor and Dropuljic's second goal to tie the contest at 4-4 heading into halftime.

Just under a minute into the second half, Taylor put Brevard back in front as the senior collected a pass from Dropuljic that enabled the attackmen to score his second goal of the game.

The Pride and Tornados traded goals the remainder of the third quarter before Greensboro scored two goals over the final four minutes to take a 9-8 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Greensboro added another goal at the 14:11 mark of the fourth quarter to take a two-goal lead at 10-8.

McKaig answered Greensboro's 3-0 run just seven seconds following the Pride's opening quarter score to cut the lead back to one score on a man down opportunity.

Dropuljic tied the game at the 9:45 mark, however, back-to-back goals by Greensboro pushed the lead back to two goals at 12-10.

The resilient Tornados did not go quietly as the veteran Taylor netted his fourth and final goal of the game with 7:41 remaining, but a Pride score at 2:58 put Greensboro back up 13-11.

McKaig cut into the two goal deficit with 52 seconds remaining for his fourth goal of the afternoon, but time ran out for the Tornados as they fell 13-12 on the road to future USA South opponent Greensboro Collge.

The Tornados return back to the Brevard Turf this coming Saturday, Apr. 8 as they host the Catawba College Indians at 3 p.m.
