Tornados storm into opening day with a 23-4 win

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Men's Lacrosse team (1-0) had a dominating performance to open up the 2017 season against Shorter University (0-1). The Tornados finished with a 23-4 victory in Saturday afternoon's nonconference season opener.

Matthew Dropuljic (Brampton, Ontario), Hewitt Farr (Santa Fe, N.M.), and Jackson McKaig (Gainesville, Fla.) each scored four goals for the blue and white. Farr scored the first goal of the season for the Tornados at the 11:48 mark of the first quarter off a pass from Kyle Hunziker (Gainesville, Fla.)

Shorter reached the board first, as Matt McHugh scored at the 14:01 mark off an assist from Jon Paul. The Hawks finished with two goals in the quarter. While Brevard had three courtesy of Farr, McKaig, and Brendan Friss (Mooresville, N.C.). Friss finished with a pair of goals for the day.

Brevard dominated the second period of play, scoring nine goals, and shutting out the Hawks. Alex Bazzell (Framingham, Mass.) started the scoring in the second, off a pass from Jack Shade (Nacberth, Pa.) Dropuljic scored back-to-back goals to extend Brevard's lead to 9-2, and Jackson McKaig scored the final goal of the half to give Brevard a 12-2 advantage entering the second half of play.

The scoring did not slow down following intermission, as Brevard added eight more goals during the third period. Shorter added one goal early in the third quarter, but Brevard's lead would never be challenged.

Farr, Shade, and Dropuljic each scored in the final period of the game as Brevard finished with a 23-4 win on opening day. Xzavier Holmes-Copeland (Woodbridge Va.) earned the win in goal for Brevard.

Hunziker totaled eight points, finishing with three goals and five assists. McKaig and Dropuljic each had six points, as the two had a pair of assists.

The Tornados will be on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 8 taking on Methodist in Fort Mill, S.C. Brevard returns home on Feb. 18 to host Young Harris College in a nonconference showdown beginning at 4 p.m.
