Brevard Golf Set for Mars Hill Invitational

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard men's and women's golf teams make a quick trip up the road this weekend to compete in the Mars Hill Invitational that will take place at the Broadmoor Golf Club in Fletcher, N.C.

It marks the first spring event for the Tornado men's team, which had two top 10 team finishes during the fall slate at the Anderson University Tournament (fourth) and Tusculum College Tournament (eighth). The men tee off the event at 9:56 a.m.

The men's team also enjoyed a solid outing by senior Craig Stephen, who opened the season by capturing the first tournament title of his collegiate career by firing a 146 (+2) at the Anderson Invitational. Stephen, who entered the second round in sixth place and three shots off the pace set by day one leader Elias Birkeland (Georgia Southwestern), carded a 70 to win by four strokes. By virtue of scoring the lowest round at the event, Stephen edged out fellow All-Tournament honorees Forrest Fowler (Anderson) and Drew Buffaloe (Bob Jones), who both fired a 150 (+6).

This marks the second tournament for the women's team in the spring season after wrapping up the Converse Spring Invite in ninth a week ago. The women's first tee time is set for 9:24 a.m.

Senior Kelsie Rhyne fired a two-day score of 187 (96-91, +43) and finished in 41st to lead the way for the Brevard women's golf team in the event. Taylor Scovel finished three shots back from Rhyne after posting rounds of 101 and 89 (190, +46) in succession, placing 44th at the par 72, 5,881-yard Carolina Country Club course.
