BC Falls to SVU in Home Conference Opener

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (4-9, 0-2 USAS) fell to Southern Virginia University (8-5 1–1 USAS) on Saturday afternoon in the home conference opener for the Tornados at the Boshamer Gymnasium.  The matchup marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools with the league schedule now underway for the newly aligned USA South Conference.

Sophomore guard Kavan Horton led the Tornados with 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, including a made three-pointer. The 14 points, which came in 23 minutes off the bench, marked the collegiate career-high for the native of nearby Asheville, North Carolina.

Junior LB Boyette scored 10 points with a pair of three-pointers. Senior guard Chancey Watson nailed three shots from beyond the arc to add nine points.  Sophomore Garrett Sutherland came off the bench to hit two three-pointers as well.

Southern Virginia had four players score in double figures led by 15 points from guard Koa Baker.

The visiting Knights never trailed in the contest, opening the game with a 9-0 lead.  After trailing 18-2, BC reeled off a 10-2 scoring run to capped off by a Horton jumper to make the cut the deficit to 20-10 with just under 12 minutes remaining.

The Tornados moved to within seven points a few minutes later in the first, but SVU responded with another scoring run to take a 43-26 lead into the intermission.

SVU maintained its lead throughout the second half, outscoring BC 44-29 in the final stanza.

The Knights outshot BC 56% to 32% from the field and made ten more free throws than the home team.  SVU out-rebounded 45-29 and held a 38-20 advantage in paint points.

The Brevard College men's basketball team will return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. with another home conference game when the Tornados host Pfeiffer at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
