Carter’s Career-High 33 Lifts Brevard to First Win of Season

SWANNANOA, N.C. – Senior guard Quincy Carter exploded for a career-high 33 points as the Brevard College men's basketball team (1-4) defeated local Western North Carolina-area foe Warren Wilson College (1-7), 76-70, on Tuesday evening at Devries Athletic Center in Swannanoa, North Carolina.

The six-point triumph marked Brevard's first win of the 2022-23 campaign.

Carter, a senior hailing from Decatur, Georgia, went a highly efficient 12-of-15 from the field and poured in a game-high four made 3-pointers on five attempts while also going a perfect 5-for-5 at the charity stripe. The performance marked BC men's basketball's first 30-plus point performance since teammate LB Boyette put up 31 points last season vs. Berea College (12/11/2021).

Boyette, a junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, was also heavily involved in Brevard's winning efforts, as he put up 19 points with nine rebounds and a career-high seven assists in a near triple-double performance.

Junior forward Sly White added six points and five rebounds off the bench, with Kavan Horton (seven rebounds) and Charles Reed (six rebounds) also putting in work on the glass as Brevard held a 44-36 edge on the glass over the host Owls.

Warren Wilson was paced by O'Darius Cade's 16-point effort, while Waylon Rutherford added 14 points off the bench.

BC's offense was efficient throughout the matchup, shooting 52.6% from the field and a 10-of-18 margin (55.6%) from beyond the 3-point line. Brevard held a 19-9 assist advantage and scored 46 points in the paint to Warren Wilson's 34. The Owls forced Brevard into 17 turnovers but were only able to score 12 points off BC's miscues. WWC held a slight advantage at the free throw line, going 70% while knocking in 16 made 3-pointers while also logging 31 points off the bench to BC's 15 for its second unit. Tuesday's contest featured seven ties and five lead changes, as BC held the lead for 29:12 of the 40-minute bout.

Warren Wilson opened up a five-point lead through the contest's first few possessions, but the game remained tight throughout the majority of the first half with neither side able to pull away more than a basket of each other. Down by one at the 6:06 mark, BC used a Carter 3-pointer, a pair of Ryan Smith free throws, a Boyette bucket, and another Carter long-range shot to string together an 11-0 scoring run that gave BC its largest lead of the first half – a nine-point 32-23 edge. The hosts were able to answer back, scoring 11 of the last 15 points in the first half to cut the deficit back down to just two points, 36-34, as both sides went to the locker rooms for the halftime intermission. Carter accounted for 22 of BC's 36 points in the first stanza.

Brevard was able to push its lead back up to eight points, 47-39, after another Carter 3-pointer at the 14:48 mark. Warren Wilson cut the deficit back down to two points, 55-53, before a pair of made free throws from Carter pushed the lead to four at the midway point of the second half.

The contest remained tight with the Tornados able to hold onto their lead for the remainder of the matchup, albeit a slim margin. A bucket from Reed and two field goals from Boyette helped the Tornados push the lead back up to nine points, 70-61, with just over three minutes left to play. Brevard extended its lead to a game-high 11-point cushion, 72-61, before the Owls started to claw back. Warren Wilson scored nine of the next 11 points capped by a pair of Waylon Rutherford free throws with 41 seconds left to play to make it a four-point margin, 74-70, but the Tornados used two Boyette free throws and two key defensive stops to clinch their first win of 2022-23, 76-70.

Brevard returns to action at home as the Tornados take on Oglethorpe University on Monday, December 5 at 7 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
