Tornados Fall Short at Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Brevard College men's basketball team (6-18, 5-12 USAS) dropped a 78-62 conference defeat to host Maryville (8-15, 7-9 USAS) in the penultimate game of the season played Saturday in Maryville, Tennessee.  In turn, Brevard and Maryville split their season series, with the Tornados topping the Scots 67-63 on January 28 at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Forward Cannon Lamb led Brevard with 17 points.  Senior Levi Lamb produced 14 points with three steals, two assists, and a blocked shot.  Senior Demari Hopper was the third Tornado to score in double figures with 11 points, all coming in the second half, to go along with a team-high five rebounds.  Senior Qadhafi Turner registered a game-high four steals.

BC found production from all four of its bench players, as Mike Williams (5 pts, 4 rebs), Hayden Cassell (5 pts, 4 rebs, 2 ast),  Messiah Pankey (3 pts) and Paris Crawford (2 pts) found the scoring column.

Maryville was led in scoring by Kevin Ching who produced a game-high 22 points. On the boards, Maryville's Brice Martin led all
players with 17 rebounds.

Brevard built an early lead from the opening tip, outscoring the Scots 9-3 with Cannon Lamb responsible for seven points in the opening 4:30 of play. 

Maryville answered with a 19-4 run to take a 22-13 lead with 8:08 to play before intermission.  The Scots would maintain their lead through the remainder of the first half, taking a 42-35 lead into the break.

Maryville continued to control the action in the second half as BC struggled from the field shooting 10-of-33 (30%) from the field and making just one three-pointer. 

In total, the Scots outshot the Tornados 46% to 36% for the contest, while making two more three-pointers.  While BC registered more points-off-turnovers (22-15), Maryville held a big edge in second-chance points (18-6).

Brevard will play its final game of the season on Saturday, February 22 at home vs. USA South Conference foe Huntingdon.  It will mark Senior Day as seniors Hopper, Levi Lamb, and Turner will play their final game in a Tornado uniform.  Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
