BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Brevard College football team (5-5, 5-2 USA South) concluded its 2022 campaign with a 41-27 victory over Southern Virginia University (1-9, 1-6 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at Knight Stadium in Buena Vista, Virginia.
The victory gave the Tornados their fifth conference victory of the season as BC finishes 2022 with a winning record in conference action for the fourth-consecutive season.
Brevard used a robust offensive outing where the Tornados racked up a season-high 476 yards of total offense with 265 passing yards to go alongside 211 rushing yards. The Tornado defense shut out Southern Virginia in the second half to propel the comeback effort.
Graduate quarterback Miles Hayes went an efficient 20-for-25 with 224 yards and a pair of passing touchdowns, while sophomore wide receiver Cooper Hogan went 2-for-2 on a pair of trick plays, connecting with senior tight end Jaden O'Leary for a game-sealing 25-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter.
Senior running back Mitchell Yoder was a spark plug for the Tornado offense, rushing nine times for 60 yards while also catching three passes for 72 yards and a pair of receiving touchdowns – a 53-yard pitch-and-catch from Hayes and a five-yard connection to begin the second-half comeback.
O'Leary, a tight end from Fayetteville, North Carolina, hauled in nine catches for 95 yards and a touchdown in his career finale, as the senior racked up career-best marks in receptions (52), receiving yards (519), and touchdowns (three) this year. Converted wide receiver Cedric Brooks added four carries for 69 yards and a touchdown on the ground with three carries for 25 yards, while senior linebacker Jerome Bass got involved on the offensive side of the ball with a pair of carries for 16 yards and a touchdown. The score marked his third overall career touchdown and his second on the offensive side of the ball.
Stamati Damalos, a fifth-year senior from Tarpon Springs, Florida, capped off his Tornado career in style with field goals from 35 and 26 yards out while also going 5-for-5 on extra point attempts. Over the course of his five years at Brevard, Damalos has made 34 field goals and 88-of-97 extra-point attempts for a grand total of 190 points accounted for, while also holding the school record with a 48-yard field goal made earlier this season.
Defensively, sophomore defensive back KJ Dagout picked off his first two passes as a Tornado while recording five tackles and a tackle-for-loss. Bass and Wyatt Lankford were the tackle leaders for the Tornados with eight tackles apiece, with Bass adding a tackle-for-loss and a fumble recovery. Toby Naylor eclipsed the 200-career-tackle mark with six tackles in the contest, as Jake Hage added six tackles alongside Reece Rubio's five stops. Trey Williams logged Brevard's only sack of the afternoon, accounting for a 17-yard loss.
SVU's Colten Shumway went 15-for-25 with 154 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Jacob Wood rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown score. Receivers Matthew Johansson and Jireek Washington each caught touchdown passes for the Knights, with Robby Balboa adding nine tackles.
