BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College football team (0-1) opened its 2022 season at home, falling to NCAA DII Shorter University (1-0), 45-6, on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Stamati Damalos, an All-Region selection by D3football.com in 2021, got off to a hot start, making a pair of field goals from 48 and 36 yards, respectively. Damalos' 48-yarder broke his own school record field goal, set last season against Averett University (47 yards, November 13, 2021). Jerome Bass led all players with 11 tackles (four solo, seven assist) and had a quarterback sack, while Toby Naylor logged 10 tackles. Wyatt Lankford (seven tackles) and Dylan James (seven tackles) also contributed heavily to BC's defensive efforts in the contest, while Kameron Moore forced BC's lone turnover on a fumble near the goal line.
Miles Hayes, a graduate transfer quarterback, made his Tornado debut in the second half, going 14-for-20 with 83 yards passing. Jaden O'Leary led all Tornados with four receptions, while Jonathan Woods had 28 receiving yards and Mitchell Yoder logged 24 rushing yards.
Nicholas Acus launched nine punts for 323 yards, an average of 35.9 yards-per-punt, to go alongside Damalos' two field goals in a strong special teams performance for BC.
Shorter was led by Aeneas Dennis through the air, who went 16-for-23 with 228 passing yards and four touchdowns. Noah Holland totaled 108 yards on the ground and a touchdown, while Devin Brown (77 yards) and Justus Durant (63 yards) helped contribute to a 260-yard performance for the Hawks on the ground.
Dorian Anderson hauled in six catches for 104 yards and an impressive three touchdowns, as Shorter totaled 301 yards through the air.
The Hawks dominated the affair from the middle of the first quarter on, after Brevard took a 3-0 lead at the 11:25 mark in the first quarter on Damalos' field goal. From that point, Shorter surged on a 45-point unanswered run that lasted until the very end of the fourth quarter, when Damalos split the uprights with a 36-yarder.
Shorter dominated possession in the first half, translating to a 31-to-10 mark on first downs while the Hawks outgained BC 571-176 in total offense. Shorter went 7-for-12 on third downs, compared to a 2-for-14 mark for the Tornados.
Brevard will look to bounce back next weekend when the Tornados travel to Newport News, Virginia to take on The Apprentice School next Saturday, September 10 at 1 p.m.
