Five Football Student-Athletes Receive USA South Conference Postseason Honors

OFFICIAL USA SOUTH RELEASE

BREVARD, N.C. – The USA South Conference has announced its All-Conference and All-Sportsmanship Teams following the 2019 USA South Football regular season, tabbing five Brevard College football student-athletes with postseason honors.

Junior defensive back Dante Anderson was voted as Brevard's lone All-Conference First Team selection of 2019, while three Tornados – Steffon Canady (junior, linebacker), Justin Parker (sophomore, offensive lineman), and Louis Williams III (sophomore, defensive lineman) – were dubbed All-Conference Second Team selections. Junior long snapper Brandon Whitfield was picked as Brevard's representative on the All-Sportsmanship Team.

This announcement adds to Brevard's already established foothold on USA South awards, as the Tornados earned six USA South postseason honors in 2018 – BC's first season eligible for USA South postseason plaudits – giving the Tornados a total of 11 such honors.

Anderson, a native of Hartwell, Georgia, has helped anchor one of the best defenses in the conference and across all of Division III football over the course of the 2019 campaign.   The Tornados ranked first in the USA South in interceptions, turnovers, points allowed-per-game, and total points allowed, among other categories.

Starting all nine games for Brevard, Anderson has officially totaled a team-best 76 tackles – including 49 solo tackles – which translates to 8.4 tackles-per-game, 5.5 tackles-for-loss, one sack, two forced fumbles, two interceptions, 10 pass breakups, and a blocked kick. He enjoyed four double-digit tackle outings and snagged two interceptions in Brevard's 42-3 victory over Greensboro.

Canady, a native of Glendale, Arizona, has sustained immense success in his first season as a Tornado en route to his All-Conference Second Team selection. The junior tallied 7.5 sacks over the course of the 2019 regular season, which ranked third in the USA South. In addition, Canady recorded 58 tackles, nine tackles-for-loss, and a forced fumble in his nine games started for Brevard.

Parker, a native of nearby Candler, North Carolina, started every game of the 2019 season at the right tackle position for Brevard's offensive line. The sophomore was tasked with protecting 2018 USA South Offensive Rookie of the Year Dalton Cole and paving the way for Brevard's stable of running backs, leading an offensive line that blocked for 1,235 total rushing yards and 25 total offensive touchdowns in 2019. Parker is a member of Brevard football's "Champions Club" - an exclusive group of exemplary student-athletes who excel in both the classroom and on the field.

Williams III, a native of Concord, North Carolina, helped to lead a stout defensive line in his second season at Brevard. Starting all games at the nose guard position in BC's defense, he tallied 34 tackles, a sack, 3.5 tackles-for-loss, and a forced fumble over the course of the 2019 season.

Whitfield, a native of Cumming, Georgia, handled all of Brevard's long snapping duties during the 2019 season. The Criminal Justice major saw action in all of Brevard's games, logging two tackles in game action in addition to handling the long snapper role.

These five Tornado student-athletes and the rest of the 2019 Brevard College football team will continue their history-making season as BC has been selected to play in a postseason bowl game for the first time in program history. Brevard will play in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Scotty Whitelaw Bowl vs. host Carnegie Mellon University this Saturday, November 23 at 1 p.m. at Gesling Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
