BREVARD, N.C. – Senior infielder Blake Burchett was honored by the USA South Conference after a historic offensive weekend for the Brevard College Baseball team. Burchett was named USA South Baseball Player of the Week.
The senior infielder from Mooresville, North Carolina went a combined 6-for-12 (.500) with a .667 on-base percentage, and a .667 slugging percentage to go along with seven runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles, one sacrifice fly, seven walks, and seven stolen bases as the Tornados posted a 3-1 record last week. Burchett was hitless in a 23-3 loss to Cortland (receiving votes nationally). In a three-game sweep of Conference foe Southern Virginia, Burchett was a combined 6-for-9 with seven runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles, one sacrifice fly, seven walks, and seven stolen bases. Burchett is now the NCAA-era career stolen base record holder at Brevard.
Burchett surpassed former Tornado standout and Major League Baseball sixth-round draft pick Champ Stuart (2011-13) in stolen bases in BC's weekend sweep of Southern Virginia, as the second-year Tornado has accumulated 58 stolen bags in 55 games played at Brevard. Burchett led the country in stolen bases per game last season, and his 22 so far in 2023 are tops in all of DIII baseball, as Brevard's team mark of 76 also leads the country.
Burchett's honor gives BC a grand total of 44 weekly awards from the USA South so far in 2022-23.
