JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - Schuyler Martire (Pine Brush, N.Y.) led the Tornados offense with two hits while Joe Nelms (Malabar, Fla.) tallied his second home run of the season as the Brevard College Tornados (8-21, 2-8 SAC) dropped a South Atlantic Conference matchup to the Carson-Newman Eagles (12-16, 3-7 SAC) by the final of 9-6 on Friday.
The Tornados offense collected nine hits on the afternoon as Martire led the way with two hits while seven different Tornados collected hits in the contest. Freshman Joe Nelms and senior Blaine Durham (Westfield, N.C) each collected a hit and two RBIs for Brevard while Brayden Morris (Pulaski, Va.) and Parker Hubbard (Salisbury, N.C.) added a hit and RBI of their own.
Brevard wasted no time getting on the board as they tacked on a run in the top of the first inning as Morris singled through the left side.
Carson-Newman would use three hits in the third to get out to a 3-1 lead before they extended their lead in the fourth to 5-1.
Brevard cut into the Eagles lead in the top of the seventh when Parker Hubbard singled to right field to drive home Kyle Morrison (Greensboro, N.C.).
The Eagles would answer in the bottom half of the inning as a two run home run from Jimmy Rice highlighted the three run inning for Carson-Newman.
Down 9-2, the Tornados would not go down easily. Senior Blaine Durham collected his seventh double of the season, driving home Morrison and Martire to cut the Eagles lead to five.
In the top of the ninth, Joe Nelms wasn't pleased with the four run game for the Tornados as he used one swing of the bat to cut the lead to three. Nelms drove an inside pitch over the left field fence to cap off the scoring for the Tornados and to bring home Ryan Roon (Dallas, Ga.).
Kyle Pittman (Monroe, N.C.) was given the start on the mound for Brevard as he went six innings while allowing seven runs on ten hits. He was relieved by Bryce Foster who faced who Carson-Newman hitter.
Freshmen Kristofer Yarbrough (Monroe, N.C.) and Kross Robinson (Morganton, N.C.) impressed out of the bullpen for the Tornados in the contest. Yarbrough pitched an inning of relief for the Tornados while allowing just one hit while Robinson threw an inning of scoreless and hitless relief.
The Tornados will look to bounce back tomorrows as they face the Carson-Newman Eagles in a doubleheader at 1:00pm to cap off the South Atlantic Conference series.
