Brevard College

Juan Mascaro was named the Director of Athletics on January 1, 2012, leading a department comprised of 20 NCAA Division II varsity athletic teams.

Under Mascaro’s watch, the athletic department has seen a multitude of improvements and growth, including the addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse as NCAA Division II sports. Both began competition in the spring of 2014.

Mascaro has instilled a series of three core values that permeate every level of Brevard’s athletic department:

1. Academic Excellence
2. Athletic Competitiveness
3. Social Development

In his role as Director of Athletics, he has made great strides toward ensuring that all three values are met. Since taking over the reins of the department, Brevard’s student-athletes have maintained a departmental GPA of 3.0.

Mascaro has influenced athletic competitiveness through several large-scale facility improvement projects. The installation of an artificial playing surface at Brevard Memorial Stadium, home of Tornados football and several Brevard High School athletic teams, was completed in August 2014 and was a collaborative effort between the college, Transylvania County Schools, and a private donor. August 2014 also saw the completion of Brevard’s $250,000 weight room project and the opening of four new and three remodeled locker rooms.

In December 2014, the college was able to officially open its new Frank Patton Track, a $180,000 project that will allow Brevard to host collegiate track events for the first time in a decade. Mascaro has also overseen the installation of four new scoreboards at Brevard’s athletic facilities.

Brevard has also enjoyed unprecedented media coverage during the Mascaro era made possible by a partnership with Ingles Markets. Brevard’s first-ever televised sporting event came on October 26, 2013 as the Tornados’ football team faced Catawba on local network WMYA My40. The network also televised a basketball doubleheader vs. Tusculum during that academic year. Brevard has nearly tripled its total number of televised games since that time, with football games against Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate, a basketball doubleheader with Lenoir-Rhyne, and a men’s basketball contest with nationally-ranked Lincoln Memorial bringing the total number of televised events to eight.

Mascaro has also sought to create a safe college environment for Brevard’s student-athletes. Evidence of student-athletes’ social growth can be seen in the numerous South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete awards earned by Brevard players, which equally weighs athletic excellence, academic achievement, and community leadership. Mascaro was also the head of the department when a Brevard student-athlete was selected to an Academic All-District team for the first time in school history.

In addition to his role as Director of Athletics, Mascaro was also elevated to the role of Vice President of Strategic Planning and Athletics by Brevard College president Dr. David Joyce in May 2014. In this capacity, Mascaro is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the overall strategic plan for the institution.

Before being named Director of Athletics, Mascaro had led the department for six months in an interim capacity. He had significant experience in administration at Brevard, after serving for a year as an Associate Athletic Director and two years as an Assistant Athletic Director.

He also spent seven years at the helm of Brevard’s men’s soccer program, leading the team from the 2007-2013 seasons. He became the first head coach in Brevard’s NCAA era when the Tornados attained full NCAA membership in 2008.

Prior to Brevard, Mascaro was an assistant coach with the Campbell University women’s soccer program. He trained the goalkeepers, served as recruiting coordinator, and monitored academic success. He was also an assistant men’s soccer coach for the University of Central Florida for five seasons, helping lead the Golden Knights to an Atlantic Sun championship and a national ranking that peaked at No. 13.

A native of El Salvador, Mascaro earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration in 1997 and his Master of Arts in Applied Economics in 1999 from the University of Central Florida.
