BC Men’s XC Finish 6th out of 25 Teams at Royals Challenge; Tornados Continue to Set PR’s

CHARLOTTE - The Brevard College men's cross country team finished in sixth place out of 25 schools at the Royals Challenge held Friday afternoon at the McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. The BC women's team placed 21st out of 24 teams in the 5K race.
 
A grand total of five Tornados across the men's and women's teams set new personal records at the event, two weeks following 11 personal records set at the Queen City Invite also held in Charlotte.
 
In the men's 8K race that included 182 total runners, sophomore Garrett Spangler, out of Irmo, South Carolina, was the top finishing Tornado with a 15th place result and a time of 26:07.7.   
 
Spangler ran a personal best, finishing 18 seconds faster than his time at the Queen City Invite, just two weeks ago.  
 
Devon Brodmyer, a sophomore from Marietta, Georgia, placed 21st for a new personal best as the second-highest BC finisher, running a 26:26.4.  Sophomore Dalton Hawley (27:50.7) finished 38th, just 31 seconds behind Brodmyer in a pack of runners. 
 
Sophomore Dylan DiCicco was the next highest finishing Tornado with a personal-best time of 28:15.9 to place 60th. George Wells, another BC sophomore, ran a time of 28:15.9 to place 75th. BC's Justin King (81st, 28:34.7) and Michael Fader (86th, 28:44.1) finished within 10 seconds of each other in another pack of runners.
 
Other men's finishers included BC's Mason Lariscy (115th, 30:21.7), who set a new personal record as a collegiate, and Anthony Padillo (154th, 34:13.8).
 
On the women's side, sophomore Zoe Capps, hailing from Hendersonville, North Carolina, was the top Brevard finisher with an 85th place result out of 178 runners.
 
BC freshman Sandra Diaz-Martinez placed 94th with a personal-best time of 22:22.4 as the next highest Tornado in the 5K. Freshman Haylea Layne ran a 23:10.9 to place 117th, while BC's Sophia Ogawa (145th, 24:20.4) and Whitney Thompson (28:58.3) also produced results. 
 
The event marked the final regular-season race for the Tornados who now turn their attention to postseason competition.  The USA South Conference Championships are set for October 30 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
