Tornados Drop Pair at USA South Quad-Match in Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Brevard College volleyball team (2-13, 0-6 USA South) dropped a pair of matches at a USA South Conference quad-match event hosted by Southern Virginia University on Saturday in Buena Vista, Virginia.

The Tornados played the host Southern Virginia in the first match of the day before taking on Mary Baldwin University in a neutral-site affair later in the afternoon.

Southern Virginia (10-6, 4-1 USAS) defeated BC in four sets, while Mary Baldwin (2-17, 1-4 USAS) won its match versus the Tornados in straight sets.

Southern Virginia 3, Brevard 1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-4, 25-17)

The host team took match one of the conference event in a four-setter that saw BC win the opening set.

The Tornados were led on the attack by junior Makenna Parkins who hammered home 10 kills.  Junior Kaitlyn Pressley led the team with 11 assists to go along with nine digs.  Libero Bailey Lance led the way defensively with a team-high 18 digs.

Southern Virginia was led by setter Sage Matheny who set up her attackers with 30 assists.

Brevard won the first set on the home court of Southern Virginia, taking a 25-23 victory to make an early statement.

The Knights evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-15 win in set number two.  SVU then dominated set three 25-4 before taking the fourth set 25-17 to take the match.

Mary Baldwin 3, Brevard 0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-13)

The Tornados dropped their second match of the day in neutral site competition to conference foe Mary Baldwin.

BC and MBU played an extremely tight first set with the Fighting Squirrels taking the opening stanza 25-23.  The two teams fought a second consecutive battle in the next set, however MBU again edged BC, this time by the score of 25-22.  Mary Baldwin then cruised to a 25–13 win in set three to take the match.

Brevard was led by Pressley who came just short of a triple-double with 11 assists, nine kills and nine digs.  Parkins registered eight kills and seven digs, while Lance recorded a team-best 11 digs.

MBU was led by Rachel Christian with 21 kills and Emily Penny with 20 assists.

Mary Baldwin benefited in the match with an 11-4 advantage in service aces en route to the victory.

Brevard will return to action on Tuesday with a home conference match vs. Salem at 6 pm at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
