BC Battles Back But Falls in USA South Opener

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College volleyball team (2-8, 0-1 USAS South) fell in a tight 3-2 decision to Pfeiffer University (3-9, 1-0 USAS) on Thursday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium in the first USA South Conference contest of 2022. 

The Tornados trailed 2-0 after the first two sets before railing off consecutive set victories to tie the match, 2-2. However, the Falcons earned a 15-6 win in the deciding fifth set to win the conference battle. 

Kaitlyn Pressley earned the sixth triple-double of her Tornado career and second of the season by totaling 11 kills, 19 assists, and 11 digs. Makenna Parkins matched her season-high with 15 kills with a season-best 11 digs for a double-double. Ashley Hoxit added nine kills offensively, while Melanie Hoyle totaled six kills in her season debut. 

Logan Priddy distributed 22 assists with nine digs, while Bailey Lance racked up 24 digs on the defensive end. The Tornados totaled nine service aces as a team. 

Madison Honeycutt led all players with 19 kills with Mattie Burris adding 11 kills on a .556 hitting percentage. Kylee Mayberry dished out 31 assists with Kira Suttles adding 27 dimes, while Morgan Shrader (26 digs) and Gabby Edwards (22 digs) paced the Falcon defense. 

Pfeiffer cruised through the first two sets (25-15, 25-18) before Brevard bounced back in a big way with a critical 25-20 set three win. The Tornados forced a winner-take-all fifth set after clinching a 25-23 victory in set number four, but the Falcons were able to pull away with a 15-6 win in the match's final set. 

The Tornados will look to bounce back as Brevard hosts its one and only USA South quad match of the season. Brevard takes on William Peace University on Saturday at 10 a.m. before a 4 p.m. first serve vs. Meredith College at The Bosh.
