Tornados Drop Five-Set Thriller in Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Brevard College volleyball team (2-5) dropped a thrilling five-set match to host Bob Jones University (6-4) on Thursday night at the Davis Field House in Greenville, South Carolina.

Bob Jones won the first set 25-23, before the Tornados answered with an identical 25-23 score in set number two. Tied 1-1, Brevard dominated the third set 25-11 to take a one-set advantage. The Bruins however responded with a 25-22 win in the fourth set to set up a deciding final stanza.

In the fifth set, Bob Jones pulled away late to take a 15-11 victory to clinch the match.

Junior outside hitter Makenna Parkins led Brevard's attack with 14 kills to go along with three blocks on the defensive end.  Junior Kaitlyn Pressley also recorded double-digit kills with 11 finishes, while dishing out eight assists and 10 digs plus a service ace.

Setter Logan Priddy led BC with 16 assists, while junior Caitlin Hagarty added five.

Sophomore Ashley Hoxit led Brevard with 21 digs and three service aces.  Logan Priddy registered 16 digs to go with a service ace, while Hagarty recorded a season-high 15 digs. 

Sophomore Kendall Rockstad came up big defensively with a career-high six blocks to lead all players.

Katherine Hoopes led Bob Jones with 16 kills, while setter Kiersten Hoopes distributed 45 assists.

With the score tied 1-1, the dominant third set by Brevard featured a 12-4 run to put away the frame.  After long service runs during the set by Hagarty, Hoxit, and Pressley, a kill by Blair Nance ultimately gave BC the 25-11 victory.

The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair with the score tied at 20-20.  The Bruins though were able to take five of the final seven points to force a fifth set.

The home team went on to never trail in the final set en route to the 3-2 deciding result.

Brevard hosts Huntingdon as part of the Tornado Classic on Friday at 6 p.m. in BC's home opener at the Boshamer Gymnasium.  Bob Jones is also participating in the two-day event at Brevard College.
