Tornados Win in Four Sets over Wesleyan, Split Tri-Match at Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Brevard College volleyball team (5-14, 4-4 USAS) split a pair of matches in a USA South Conference tri-match hosted by Covenant on Saturday in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

The Tornados defeated Wesleyan (1-12, 0-6 USAS,) 3-1, (25-23, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18) in a neutral site affair to cap off the tri-match.  In the first match of the day for the Tornados, host Covenant (12-6, 6-1 USAS) topped BC, 3-0, (25-8, 25-17, 25-10).

Sophomore Kaitlyn Pressley led the Tornados in the four-set victory over Wesleyan with the third triple-double of her collegiate career.  The Brevard, North Carolina native registered 23 assists, 12 kills and 11 digs in the all-around performance. 

Freshmen Melanie Hoyle slammed home a career-high 15 kills to lead the BC attack, while freshman Ashley Hoxit also delivered 10 kills.  Grace Pukas hit double-figures in both assists (14) and digs (10), both season-highs for the junior from Valrico, Florida.

Brevard served 12 aces, the fifth time this season that the Tornados have registered double-digit aces in a contest.  Senior Morgan Graham and sophomore Bailey Lance both hit on four aces to lead the charge.  Pukas registered two aces, while Pressley and Hoyle each provided one ace apiece.

BC finished off the first set 25-23 on a set point by Hoxit off an assist from a Pressley. The Tornados then opened up a 16-8 lead on a kill by Pressley off a Pukas assist and cruised from there winning the final two points of the set on serves from Hoyle.

After Wesleyan forced an additional set with a 25-20 third set win, the Tornados wrapped up the match with a 25-18 victory in set four.  Lance helped open up a 17-10 lead on a service run that included two aces.  Following a four-point run by Wesleyan, BC finished off the set and match on a final winner by Pressley off another Pukas assist.

Host Covenant took the first match of BC's day in straight sets. Pressley and a Priddy led the Tornado offense with six kills and eight assists respectively.  Lance and freshman Caroline Malphrus each registered six digs to pace the Tornado defense.

Brevard returns to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. vs. Piedmont in USA South Conference action at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
