Hoyle Tallies 12 Kills in Crossover Tournament Day One Finale

BREVARD, N.C. – Freshman middle blocker Melanie Hoyle registered a game, team, and career-high 12 kills to lead the Brevard College volleyball (1-6) offense in the day one finale of BC's USA South Crossover Tournament held at the Boshamer Gymnasium. Visiting Greensboro College (7-4) earned a 3-0 victory over the Tornados to cap off the first day of the 10-match, two-day crossover tournament that features seven institutions – Brevard, Covenant College, Greensboro, Maryville College, Meredith College, Pfeiffer University, and William Peace University.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Pressley added a nine-kill, nine-assist, and six-dig effort, while Logan Priddy dished out 19 assists. Bailey Lance led all defenders with 21 digs on the defensive side to go along with Ashley Hoxit's eight digs.

Greensboro was paced by Carly Uhlir who registered 10 kills. Mckenzie Norris added a game-high 26 assists, while Lauren Kunke led all Pride defenders with 18 digs.

The Pride jumped out to the early advantage in the first stanza, leading by as many as 12 points, 18-6. BC used a 5-0 scoring swing to cut the deficit to an 18-11 margin before slicing the Pride lead to as many as six points, 20-14, however, the visitors went on a 5-1 run to close out the first set by a final of 25-15.

Brevard and Greensboro then battled in a tightly-contested second set that featured nine ties and four lead changes. BC took its first lead of the set, 5-4, after a Hoxit kill. Greensboro used four consecutive points to stretch their lead up to 9-5, but the Tornados answered right back with a four-point run of their own that featured kills from Hoyle and Pressley.

Greensboro led late by as many as four points, 18-14, but the Tornados hung around, taking a 21-19 lead after a Hoxit service ace and maintaining a 22-20 advantage after a Hoyle kill. Greensboro retook the lead at 24-23, bringing up set point four times before finally pulling through with the 29-27 second set triumph.

The third and ultimately final set showcased the Tornados jumping out to the early lead, 7-2, before a five-point Greensboro scoring run brought the score level at seven apiece. Both sides battled before Greensboro extended its lead up to three points, 16-13. The Pride used their momentum to surge their lead even larger, reaching as many as seven points, 22-15, after an Uhlir kill. Greensboro's Sarah Oakes drove home the final kill of the match, ending set three with a final of 25-20 to give the visitors the three-set sweep.

The USA South Crossover Tournament hosted by Brevard College rolls on, as six matches are scheduled for Saturday at the Boshamer Gymnasium. The Tornados will take on Pfeiffer at 3:30 p.m. before concluding the 10-match tournament at 7:30 vs. William Peace.
