Brooke Garland Awarded ITA Atlantic Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award

BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College women's tennis alumna Brooke Garland '23 has been awarded the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the Atlantic Region.

Garland, a recent Summa Cum Laude graduate of BC, was one of just three NCAA DIII women's tennis players selected for the award in the country, joining Pallavi Goculdas of Case Western Reserve (Central Region) and Jamie Marcus of Pomona Pitzer (West Region). Garland will now advance to the National Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award, announced on June 7.

Garland, a native of Canton, North Carolina, and an Exercise Science graduate of BC maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout her four years at Brevard and graduated with honors. She received the Highest GPA Award in the Exercise Science major in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Garland was also awarded the Most Outstanding Undergraduate Student in a Graduate Program in 2023.

While at Brevard, Garland served as a member of the Tri Beta Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, and Alpha Chi Honor Society. Garland was a three-time selection onto the USA South Conference Women's Tennis All-Sportsmanship Team and was awarded as the Female Perfect Storm at the 2023 BESPYs – BC's annual Athletic Awards Ceremony.

In the community, Garland spent time working at the Brevard Racquet Club helping with junior and adult clinics. Every other week, Garland volunteered her time working at the Community Kitchen and spent most Saturdays in the Fall volunteering at Aston Park in nearby Asheville, North Carolina assisting with the Asheville Tennis Association.

On the BC campus, Garland worked with students serving as a Learning Consultant, and also was a Teachers' Assistant to professors in her classes. Garland was involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and during the 2022-23 season served as the Vice President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Garland has already begun her Master's degree at BC and will pursue a Health and Human Performance Master's at Brevard while continuing her playing career.

Over the past 2 years, Garland has helped the BC tennis program raise well over $2,000 by helping design shirts, bucket hats, beanies, and car decals to sell. Garland has also helped manage the Brevard Tennis social media pages. Her involvement has grown the BC Tennis Instagram account with new/exciting creative features, match day posts, and recognition posts for other fellow players on the team.

The most recent impact that she has had on the BC Tennis program spearheading the interior redesign of the Tennis Building at the McCoy Tennis Complex. This included painting and trimming the walls/doors of the tennis lobby, hallway, and locker rooms.  She created, designed, and hung almost all of the wall decorations that you see in the tennis lobby and locker rooms.
