Tornados Win Two on Final Day of Hilton Head Adventure

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Brevard College women's tennis team (5-8) wrapped up its five-day, five-match run at the PTR Spring Fest on Tuesday, sweeping a pair of matches in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

The Tornados won their first match of the day, a 6-2 victory over Morningside University (Iowa) 9-0 in the morning, followed by a 6-3 win vs. Albion College on Tuesday evening to conclude the event.

Over the five matches in Hilton Head, the Tornados went 3-2 with three consecutive victories to conclude the event, riding its longest winning streak of the season.

In Tuesday morning's win over Morningside, the Tornados took a 2-1 advantage following doubles play.  Junior Hamrick Perry and freshman Sophie Trantham impressed again in the number one doubles position to earn an 8-3 victory.  BC also won via forfeit in no. 3 doubles to benefit from a lead heading into singles competition

A forfeit in no. 6 singles then gave Brevard a 3-1 lead, needing two wins in the five remaining matches for the team victory.  In number two singles, Perry defeated her opponent in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-0.  Junior Brooke Garland then clinched the match, also with a straight-set victory, 6-4 and 6-4 in no. 4 singles.

With the team victory in hand, attention turned to a hard fought contest featuring junior Alli Kogoy in a tiebreaker situation in number three singles. Kogoy won 6-3 in the first set, then dropped the second set 2-6 setting up a tiebreaker whereby she was able to outlast her opponent 10-5.

In the later match, all three doubles matches proved to be tight affairs.  Trantham and Perry won 8-4 in no. 1 singles to give BC a 1-0 lead. However. Albion responded with an 8-6 win in no. 2 doubles and an 8-7 (10-8) victory in a thrilling match with Kogoy and sophomore Melody Ferguson holding their own for the Nados.

Trailing 2-1 entering singles play, Brevard needed a strong performance across the six spots to ensure a come-from-behind victory. BC came through with straight-set wins in five of the six matches to take the 6-3 result.

Perry again led the way, this time blanking her opponent - 6-0, 6-0 - to cruise to a win in no. 2 singles and tie the match 2-2.  Hannah Hersh (no. 1), Kogoy (no. 3), Garland (no. 4) and Trantham were all victorious as well. In total, BC outscored Albion 60-14 in the number one through five singles spots to solidify for the win.

Brevard will return home for its next match on Monday, March 14 when the Tornados host Meredith College at 4 p.m. at the McCoy Tennis Complex.
