Women’s Tennis Competes in Doubleheader at Home

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's tennis team (1-3) competed in a doubleheader of action on Sunday at the McCoy Tennis Complex, hosting Johnson C. Smith University and the University of Virginia at Wise. BC fell 5-4 to the Bulls of Johnson C. Smith before an 8-1 defeat to UVa-Wise. 

Johnson C. Smith 5, Brevard 4

Hamrick Perry (number-three singles) and Sophie Trantham (number-five singles) each claimed individual victories in the team defeat. Perry earned a 6-4, 6-2 win, while Trantham claimed a sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the number-five spot. 

The Tornados also claimed a pair of decisions by default, with Melody Ferguson credited with her first singles win as a member of the BC tennis team in the number-six spot by default. Brevard also won number-three doubles by default. 

UVa-Wise 8, Brevard 1

The Tornados hosted their second DII opponent of the day, UVa-Wise. The Tornados picked up a singles victory before falling by a final of 8-1 as a team. 

Trantham picked up her second singles victory of the day in thrilling fashion, claiming a 10-2 win in the tiebreaker after coming back from a 6-4 defeat in set one with a 6-2 victory in the second set. 

Brooke Garland, a junior from Canton, North Carolina, also had a tight match in number-four singles, falling narrowly 7-5 in set number one before a 6-2 defeat in the second set. 

The Tornados women's tennis team will be back in action on Sunday, October 3 to take on Milligan College at the McCoy Tennis Complex scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
