White’s Free Kick Goal Holds as Tornados Shut Out Owls

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's soccer team (7-3-4) needed just one goal - a long-range free kick by graduate defender Emma White - to secure victory as BC shut out Mississippi University for Women (5-5-1), 1-0 on Thursday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

The win snaps a four-match streak of draws for BC and extends its unbeaten result streak to six matches which surpasses the program's record in the NCAA era.

White, a graduate student from Greensboro, North Carolina, scored her fifth goal of the season on the 32nd-minute free kick that was from over 40 yards away. The goal was the seventh of White's five-year Tornado career.

White and Abbie Worsencroft each took a pair of shot attempts, while Grace Black, Chantal Carmenzind, Maddy Edwards, Olivia Grisewood, Justine St. Louis, and Mikayla Zvekan all recorded shot attempts as well.

Nicole Arroyo (3-2-2) logged the fourth shutout of her freshman season, making five saves to keep MUW off of the scoresheet.

BC outshot the Owls 10-8, made five saves, and took five corner kicks while withstanding 16 fouls from MUW.

White took Brevard's first shot attempt of the contest following two early Owl shots in the 19th minute on a free kick that forced a save. The Owls took two more shots before Edwards ripped an attempt toward goal off a cross into the box, but the effort was dealt with by MUW's goalkeeper.

Following an Owl foul, White lined up for her free-kick attempt over 40 yards away from the goal. White ripped the ball through the air, giving it enough loft to loop off the fingertips of the keeper and into the top portion of the net, giving the Tornados a 1-0 lead that Brevard was able to hold on to.

Brevard was able to control possession throughout the second half of action, outshooting the visitors 6-3 in the second stanza while Arroyo stopped both of MUW's shots on target. BC's defense held firm to complete the shutout effort.

The Tornados return to USA South Conference action on Saturday at 3 p.m. vs. Methodist University at home.
