BC Women’s Soccer Draws 1-1 vs. Southern Virginia on Friday Night

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's soccer team (6-3-3, 0-1-3 USA South) drew in its third-consecutive conference contest, as the Tornados tied with Southern Virginia University (5-5-1, 1-1-1 USAS) 1-1 after 90 minutes on Friday night at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Mikayla Zvekan scored a breakaway goal to tie the contest late in the first half on Kiara Porcelli's assist on a long through ball, equalizing the contest just before the halftime intermission. The score would remain level at 1-1 following a scoreless 45 minutes in the second half.

Nicole Arroyo (2-2-2) earned the draw in her sixth collegiate start, making four crucial saves to keep the contest level.

SVU used a free kick in the 37th minute to take the 1-0 lead when Morgan Romney scored on Ella Thomas' free kick that Romney put away.

The Knights held the overall shot advantage 11-5 in the match, including a 7-2 mark in the first stanza. Brevard made four saves while Southern Virginia took all four corner kicks in the contest. Three total cautions were issued in the match.

SVU outshot the Tornados 4-1 before its lone score of the contest, maintaining possession throughout most of the first half. After a Brevard foul, Thomas whipped in a long cross on the free kick that found the head of Romney, who finished the scoring opportunity to give the Knights the early lead, 1-0.

After a missed SVU shot on the next possession, BC countered back quickly with a 40th-minute goal of its own. Abbie Worsencroft took the ball away from the Knights and played it to Porcelli, who went down the middle of the field to find Zvekan with a through ball. The freshman forward from Draper, Utah finished the opportunity, tying the match up just before halftime.

The second stanza was a defensive struggle as neither side was able to muster many meaningful scoring opportunities, as both sides finished scoreless to leave the final in a 1-1 draw.

The Tornados are back in action next Tuesday, October 11 in Charlotte, North Carolina against Johnson & Wales - NC at 7 p.m. Brevard returns home for a non-conference match on Thursday, October 13 vs. Mississippi University for Women at 7 p.m. prior to returning to USA South play on Saturday, October 15 at 3 p.m. against Methodist University.
