Brevard Wins Fourth-Straight with 2-0 Victory vs. Carlow

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (4-1) won its fourth-consecutive game and notched its fourth-straight shutout, using a pair of goals to take a 2-0 win over Carlow University (1-1) on Thursday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Over the course of its undefeated streak, Brevard has outscored its opponents 14-0. BC's defense has not allowed a goal in 374:23 of game time.

Graduate defender Emma White scored a goal from over 35 yards out on a free kick while also notching an assist for three points in the match. Abby Mayer, the reigning USA South Conference Player of the Week, scored her seventh goal in her last three matches on a double assist from White and Mikayla Zvekan. Mayer pushed the attack all night with nine shot attempts and six on-goal, while Taylor Richardson added five shots and two on-goal.

Mackenzie Lozano (2-1) earned her second collegiate shutout victory, making five crucial saves to maintain BC's fourth clean sheet in a row.

The Tornados outshot the Celtics 20-11 and took one more corner kick (4-3) than the visitors in a matchup that proved evenly matched for much of the contest.

Brevard's Mayer and White took a pair of early shot attempts within the game's first 12 minutes before a 14th-minute foul set up the first goal of the contest. White lined up a free kick on the left side of the 30-yard-line and drilled it towards the upper portion of the goal, drawing the Carlow keeper out. The ball deflected off the keeper's outstretched fingertips and into the back of the net to give BC the early advantage in the 15th minute.

Carlow nearly answered right back in the 22nd minute when a free-kick shot by Natalie DiGiorno hit off the crossbar. Mayer answered back with three-consecutive shot attempts before Richardson fired three shot attempts prior to the halftime intermission.

The Celtics took two shot attempts, both on-goal resulting in Lozano saves, to begin the second half. BC replied with a strong buildup that had Tae Brown running free toward the goal, however, the junior's shot attempt was just high of the mark.

After turning away several Carlow attacking opportunities, BC answered with another challenge at goal, with Zvekan's shot attempt hitting the right post as the Tornados continued to knock on the door of a second goal.

Mayer and Richardson both had close attempts in the next 15 minutes of action before the Tornados broke through with a 71st-minute goal as White played a long ball over the top that was taken by Zvekan who immediately played it in towards Mayer, who slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Brevard ripped off five-consecutive shot attempts as the Tornados searched for a third goal before wrapping up a 2-0 shutout victory.

The Tornados begin a season-long five-match road swing on Sunday, September 18 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina vs. Carolina University at 4 p.m.
