Mayer’s Hat Trick Propels Tornados to 4-0 Triumph over Owls

BREVARD, N.C. – Junior forward Abby Mayer earned the first hat trick of her career as the Brevard College women's soccer team (2-1) surged past Warren Wilson College (0-2-1) on a rainy Tuesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Mayer, a native of Roxboro, North Carolina who transferred to BC from North Greenville University, totaled the first three goals of her Tornado career while also adding an assist for seven total points. Mayer's hat trick marks the fifth in program history for Brevard College women's soccer, as the junior joins alumni Ashley Hughes and Bailey Varley as the only Tornados to record three goals in a single game.

Junior forward Grace Black also got on the scoresheet for the Tornados with her first goal of the season, while seven different Tornados tallied assists as Brevard put on a passing clinic in its 4-0 victory. Alyssa Hetherington, Mayer, and Abbie Worsencroft logged assists, while junior Channing Barker and the freshman trio of Olivia Guillermo, Izzy Hagen, and Mikayla Zvekan all totaled the first assists of their collegiate careers.

Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Lozano (1-1) got the start in goal for Brevard and earned her first collegiate victory as BC's defense dominated the visiting Owls.

Brevard outshot Warren Wilson 25-2 in the contest, including a dominant 15-0 mark in the first half. Warren Wilson made seven total saves on 11 shots-on-goal, while BC won seven corner kicks.

BC wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Worsencroft launched a deep ball that found Mayer over the top. The junior forward beat WWC's goalkeeper one-on-one and slotted the ball home to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.

Just six minutes later, Black doubled Brevard's lead. Hetherington won a loose ball and passed to Mayer, who immediately found an open Black onsides. The junior from Charleston, South Carolina fired a right-footed shot into the right-hand corner of the goal, as Brevard held a 2-0 advantage just 16 minutes into the contest.

Mayer scored her second goal of the evening after clever passing from Barker and Hagan led Mayer through the back-line of the Owl defense. Mayer ripped a shot to the far side that beat the outstretched arms of Carrigan Causby, giving BC a controlling 3-0 lead early in the contest.

WWC held the Tornados scoreless through the remainder of the first half, but BC added insurance to its lead in the 66th minute when Guillermo played the ball to the right side, finding Zvekan, who whipped a pass towards Mayer as the junior capped off her hat trick in style to help wrap up BC's dominant 4-0 home victory.

The Tornados are back in action at home on Saturday when Brevard faces Allen University, with kickoff slated for 4 p.m.
