Women’s Lacrosse Falls in Conference Play to Huntingdon

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's lacrosse team (3-7, 1-3 USA South) dropped a USA South matchup to Huntingdon College (3-5, 2-4 USAS), 20-4, on a windy Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Huntingdon used a 7-0 scoring stretch in the second period to distance itself for the 16-goal victory.

Senior midfielder KC Collins led all Tornados with two goals and an assist, while Emily Denaga and Savannah Colliver also scored goals. Denaga, a freshman from Buford, Georgia, dished out a pair of assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Lexi Maclauchlin (3-5) made 15 saves to anchor BC's defensive efforts in the contest. Maclauchlin's 15 saves, which is the second-most in a single game in her young Tornado career. Collins and Denaga each won seven draw controls, while Maclauchlin added four ground balls.

Huntingdon was led by Reagan Bullock, who scored seven goals, while Celina Owens-Campbell added five goals in HC's 20-goal effort.

The Hawks outshot BC 48-12 and held a 39-13 advantage in ground balls. HC went 13-for-16 on clear attempts and forced 31 Tornado turnovers, but BC held the edge in draw controls, 17-10.

Brevard opened the scoring up after each side went without a goal in the first six minutes of action. Denaga found Collins, who finished the shot attempt to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead. Huntingdon answered right back within a minute to tie things up, 1-1. Denaga scored an unassisted goal at the six-minute mark of the first period to give Brevard the lead back, 2-1.

Huntingdon went on to score 12 unanswered goals into the third period to retake the lead, 13-2. Colliver tallied her first goal of the contest at the 8:06 mark in the third quarter to break the scoring run up, but the Hawks scored seven-straight goals to stretch their lead to a 20-3 margin. Collins scored her second goal of the afternoon in the final minute of action as Huntingdon wrapped up its conference win.

The Tornados are back in action on Tuesday, March 29 with a road test at Piedmont University in Demorest, Georgia at 7 p.m. BC next plays at home on Saturday, April 2 against Meredith College at 11 a.m.
