Fourth Quarter Pfeiffer Run Sinks Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's lacrosse team (3-4, 1-1 USA South) dropped a highly-competitive match to Pfeiffer University (1-5, 1-1 USAS), 18-12, on Tuesday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

The Tornados and Falcons were tied at 12-12 heading into the fourth quarter before the Falcons scored six-consecutive goals to take the USA South victory.

Freshman midfielder Emily Denaga scored a team-high five goals to lead all Tornado goal-scorers, while also dishing out an assist for six points. Denaga grabbed seven ground balls while also causing a team-best three caused turnovers. Senior midfielder KC Collins scored three goals and dished out three assists, while Parker Moore added a pair of goals with an assist. Savannah Colliver and Grace Vaught also contributed goals to Brevard's efforts. Defensively, Dani Stavely hauled in seven ground balls, while Lexi Maclauchlin (3-4) made 12 saves.

Pfeiffer's attack was paced by Alexis Murriel's seven-goal performance, while Analise Robinson scored five goals and two assists and Julia Barbato posted four goals.

The Falcons held a slight advantage on shot attempts (37-31), while BC totaled 32 ground balls to Pfeiffer's 31. BC was 15-for-25 on clear attempts and totaled 12 saves in the contest.

Tuesday's contest was hotly contested with 10 ties and five lead changes.

Pfeiffer opened up a 3-1 advantage at the 10:03 mark in the first period before BC went on a 3-0 scoring run, capped off with 28 seconds left in the first quarter as Brevard took a 4-3 lead after consecutive Denaga goals. The Falcons opened the second quarter with a goal before Denaga and Moore put back-to-back goals into the back of the net to give the Tornados a game-high two-goal advantage, 6-4, with 3:29 left to go in the first half. Pfeiffer responded with a pair of goals inside the two-minute mark, tying things up at 6-6 as the two sides went into the halftime intermission.

Both squads were able to score six goals each in the third period, with Collins leading all Tornados with three goals in the stanza Denaga, Moore and Vaught all logging goals in the third quarter. Pfeiffer scored a man-up goal to end the third quarter, leaving the score tied at 12-12 heading into the contest's final period.

The Falcons continued that positive momentum into the fourth quarter, scoring an eventual seven goals unanswered to clinch the victory by a final of 18-12.

Both Brevard and Pfeiffer wore green ribbons on their uniforms for the game and gathered prior to the contest to pay tribute on the anniversary of the passing of University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse student-athletes who died in a fatal car accident two years ago.
