Falcons Stifle Tornados in Second Half for Upset Win, 59-49

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Brevard College women's basketball team (13-6, 10-3 USA South) was held scoreless for a 13-minute stretch in the second half as Pfeiffer University (5-13, 3-9 USAS pulled out a 59-49 upset victory over the Tornados on Tuesday evening in Misenheimer, North Carolina.

Makenna Parkins led all Tornados with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and a team-best four made 3-pointers to go alongside a team-high eight rebounds. Chyna Pouncey added eight points off the bench with a perfect 3-of-3 mark from the field and a 2-for-2 performance beyond the arc with six rebounds, while Naliyah Boyce added four points and six rebounds.

Pfeiffer's efforts were led by Alexis Bynum and Tanaesha Ellison, who each scored 19 points. Ellison grabbed 12 rebounds, forced six steals, and dished out four assists while Bynum went 7-of-11 from the field with a perfect 4-of-4 mark from long distance. Hannah Isley added eight points, six steals, and 12 rebounds.

Pfeiffer hit 37% of its shots compared to a lowly 25% mark for the Tornados, who hit just 15 of their 59 field goal attempts. BC held a 10-7 advantage on 3-pointers made and hit 60% of its free throws, while also holding a slim 44-41 edge on rebounding. The difference came as Brevard committed 23 turnovers in the contest, leading to 20 Falcon points-off-turnovers. The game featured six lead changes and four ties, while the Falcon defense smothered BC in the second half. Pfeiffer outscored Brevard 33-20 In the second stanza, including a point where the Falcons held BC scoreless for over 13 minutes of action.

BC held a 19-13 edge after the first quarter and took a game-high eight-point lead at the nine-minute mark of the second period before Pfeiffer clawed back into the contest, cutting the deficit to three points at the intermission, 29-26 in a low-scoring first half of action.

Pfeiffer's offense came alive late in the third period, as the hosts ended the quarter on a 13-0 scoring run to take a five-point lead, 51-46. The Falcons carried their stifling defense into the fourth period where they held BC scoreless until there were 57 seconds left to play. Pfeiffer held BC to a 1-of-16 mark from the field and 1-of-7 from three-point land, forcing three turnovers as the Falcons closed out the upset win over Brevard, 59-49.

Brevard will look to bounce back as the Tornados have a pair of critical contests at home to battle for USA South Tournament position. BC hosts NC Wesleyan University on Friday at 6 p.m. before facing Meredith College on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
