BC Drops Game to Scots as Two Teams Split Regular-Season Series
BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (14-9, 8-6 USAS) dropped a conference matchup to visiting Maryville (10-13, 6-8 USAS) 75-71 on Sunday afternoon at the Boshamer Gymnasium.  The game was a make-up contest that was originally scheduled for Jan. 12.

The result gave the two teams a regular-season split with the Tornados winning the other matchup with the Scots less than a week ago, a 65-63 win in Maryville, Tennessee on Feb. 9.

On Sunday, Maryville used a 28-18 fourth quarter to pull away for the victory after trailing 53-47 at the end of the third quarter.  For the entirety of the contest, the Scots outshot the Tornados 45% to 33%, while going to the line for 13 more attempts and making ten more free throws.

Graduate forward Destiny Williams led the Tornados with 26 points on 11 field goals and three made 3-pointers.  Williams also pulled down 10 rebounds to record the 16th double-double in her career.  The scoring output also marked the 16th 20-plus point performance in her career.

Defensively, Williams proved to be a force as well as she registered eight steals to match a career-high. It marked the third time in her career and the second time this season that Williams recorded eight steals.  The native of Aiken, South Carolina now has 260 career steals, just seven shy of the school record of 267 held by Michaela Watkins (2010-13).

Senior center Avery Lockwood put together a strong showing on the glass with a season-high 10 rebounds, including five boards on the offensive end.  Freshman point guard Lexi Shepard dished out a team-high five assists to lead the team in ball distribution.

Sophomore Calli Wells came off the bench to score 11 points. It marked the third time in the last five games that Wells has scored in double figures.

Maryville's Jordan Heifner led all scorers with 33 points, while Hannah Jones (15 pts), Elsa Eckenrod (14 pts) and Courtney Carruthers (13 pts) gave the Scots a total of four players in double figures.

The two teams played a tight first quarter with Maryville taking a 16-13 advantage into period number two.  The Scots then built an eight-point lead at 29-21 in the second quarter before BC responded with a 12-2 run over the period's final three minutes to take a 33-31 lead into the half.

The lead seesawed throughout the third quarter until back-to-back buckets by Lockwood and Shepard gave the Tornados an eight-point lead at 51-43.

A jumper by Heifner with 5:26 to play in the fourth gave MC the lead as part of an 8-0 run. The Scots were able to maintain their lead throughout the final minutes to secure the victory and the split of the regular-season series.

Brevard will conclude its regular season with a road game at Huntingdon College on Tuesday in Montgomery, Alabama. The Tornados have clinched a spot in the USA South Conference tournament and will host a first-round game on Saturday, Feb. 19 in a USAS West Division First-Round matchup. Game time and opponent for the postseason game are yet to be determined.
