Brevard Falls to Piedmont, 70-57

BREVARD, N.C. - Sophomore forward Makenna Parkins matched her season-high with 16 points, but the Brevard College women's basketball team (9-8, 4-5 USAS) fell 70-57 in a USA South Conference matchup to Piedmont University (17-3, 11-1 USAS) on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Parkins, a native of Marion, North Carolina, totaled 16 points on five made field goals and a perfect 6-of-6 mark from the charity stripe to go alongside five rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocked shots.

Destiny Williams added 12 points and four rebounds, while Avery Lockwood poured in seven points off the bench. Calli Wells posted a season-high six points in the contest.

Piedmont was paced by four double-digit scorers, led by Livia Skinner's 19-point performance. Hope Franklin added 16 points and nine boards off the bench.

Brevard was able to take an early lead, 4-2, before an 8-0 run left the score at 10-4 in favor of Piedmont. The Tornados were able to cut the deficit back to just one point on multiple occasions before the Lions pushed the lead up to a six-point margin, 21-15, at the end of the quarter.

Piedmont was able to outscore Brevard 14-6 in the first six-plus minutes of the second quarter to hold a 14-point advantage, 35-21, with 3:35 left in the half. The Tornados were able to score the final four points of the quarter on a Lockwood layup and a pair of Parkins free throws, making the contest an eight-point affair,  37-29, at the halftime intermission.

The third quarter proved to be low-scoring early on before the Lions found their rhythm, holding the Tornados to just nine points while opening up a 15-point lead, 53-38, as the contest shifted to the fourth and final quarter of play.

A Franklin layup with 4:20 left to play gave Piedmont its largest margin of the evening at 19 points, but the Tornados were able to outscore Piedmont overall in the quarter, 19-17. The deficit proved too large, as the Lions clinched the conference victory 70-57.

Piedmont outshot the Tornados from the field, 48% to 36%, and hit six 3's compared to Brevard's one. The Lions dished out 17 assists and scored 23 points off BC miscues, as each team scored a total of 40 points in the paint.

The Tornados continue their busy week with a trip to Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Thursday to face Covenant at 6 p.m.
