Berea Uses Big Fourth Quarter to Escape Tornados in Kentucky

BEREA, Ky. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (9-7, 4-4 USAS) dropped a USA South Conference contest to Berea College (17-3, 11-0 USAS) on Saturday at the Seabury Center in Berea, Kentucky by a final of 68-57. 

Both sides were tied 43-43 going into the fourth quarter, but the Mountaineers were able to escape, outscoring the Tornados 24-13 in the fourth quarter. 

Destiny Williams scored a team-high 19 points with a season-high six assists and five rebounds, making seven field goals. Shakirah Thompson added nine points on three made 3-pointers, while Avery Lockwood added five points and seven rebounds. 

Berea had three players in double figures, with Bailee Vanover leading the way with 22 points on seven field goals and eight made free throws. Aaliyah Hampton scored 18 points, while Destiny Combs scored 15. 

Brevard outshot the Mountaineers 45% to 40% from the field and knocked in seven 3-pointers to Berea's three. Berea shot 27 total free throws compared to Brevard's nine. 

Berea forced 22 Brevard turnovers, turning them into 20 points off turnovers while outscoring the Tornados 42-26 in the paint. 

The game was highly contested, featuring 18 ties and 14 lead changes. 

Brevard opened the contest with a 14-5 lead after a Williams 3-pointer. A Williams jumper made the score 18-9 with 2:45 left in the first quarter. Berea ended the half with a 9-0 run that left the score at 18-18 heading into the second period. 

Each side scored just four points apiece in the first seven minutes of the second quarter, leaving the score 22-22. Berea scored eight out of the next 13 points to take a three-point, 30-27 lead at the intermission. 

Brevard opened the game on an 8-0 run to hold a five-point lead, 35-30 lead to kickstart the third period. Berea was able to retake the lead, 41-38, with 1:37 left in the stanza, as both teams jockeyed back and forth before the game went to the fourth quarter tied, 43-43. 

Berea outscored the Tornados 24-13 in the fourth and final period to earn the season sweep over Brevard, 67-56. 

The Tornados return to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. as Brevard hosts Piedmont at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
