Second Half Surge Pushes Brevard Over Pfeiffer

BREVARD, N.C. - Three Tornados scored in double figures as Brevard College (5-2) used a big second half to defeat Pfeiffer University (3-4), 74-61, on Thursday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

Destiny Williams led all scorers with 17 points to go alongside eight boards, five steals, three blocks, and three assists. Makenna Parkins added a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, while Lexi Shepard scored 11 points and dished out a team-high six assists in her first collegiate start.

Shakirah Thompson hit a pair of 3-pointers en route to a nine-point performance, while Avery Lockwood and Chyna Pouncey added six points each.

Pfeiffer was led by Alexis Bynum and Jahlea Peters, who each tallied 10 points, while Angel Roland grabbed five rebounds.

Brevard was able to outpace the Falcons, shooting at a 48% clip compared to Pfeiffer's 34% mark from the field. Both sides shot 25% from long range, while Pfeiffer hit 63% of its free throws.

BC was able to move the ball around with 17 assists and cause havoc with 19 steals, which the Tornados turned into 38 points off turnovers. Brevard dominated the paint, outscoring the Falcons 48-28 in the painted area.

BC came out hot with 56% shooting from the field in the first quarter. The Tornados opened up the contest on a 12-4 run capped by a Williams layup, as Brevard took a 20-13 lead into the second period behind Williams six points in the quarter.

Brevard led by as many as 10 points three different times in the second quarter before Pfeiffer used a 7-1 scoring run that cut BC's lead to four points, 32-28, at the halftime intermission. Williams led all scorers at the break with 12 points and three steals, with Parkins adding six points and four rebounds.

The third quarter saw the Tornados outscore Pfeiffer by their largest margin of the contest. After the Falcons were able to cut the Tornado lead to one point at 34-33 and two points at 41-39, the Tornados went on an 8-0 scoring run to push their lead back up to 10 points, 49-39, with 2:26 left. BC was able to stretch its lead to a game-high 12 points, 55-43, at the end of the third quarter.

Lockwood led all Tornados with six points on 3-of-3 shooting in the third quarter, while Shepard added four points on 2-of-2 as Brevard shot at a 53% clip in the period.

Brevard used a game-best 14-0 scoring stretch to open up the fourth quarter, pushing its lead to a 69-43 margin, helping the Tornados finish off the Falcons by a final of 74-61.

BC closes its three-game homestand on Friday evening when the Tornados take on Warren Wilson College at 7 p.m.
