Tornados Dominate Conference Opener, Five Score in Double Figures

DECATUR, Ga. – The Brevard College women's basketball team (3-1, 1-0 USAS) cruised to a 95-59 victory in its first USA South Conference contest of the 2021-22 season over Agnes Scott College (0-5, 0-1 USAS) on Saturday afternoon in Decatur, Georgia.

Graduate forward Destiny Williams led five Tornados who scored in double figures on Saturday, scoring 19 points while leading BC's defensive effort with four steals. Fifth-year senior Shakirah Thompson added 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting – with all shots coming from 3-point range – with a pair of assists, while Ty'She Washington scored 12 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Makenna Parkins scored 14 points off the bench, shooting an efficient 6-for-8 from the field with five rebounds. Lexi Shepherd scored a career-high 10 points and dished out a game-best five assists, while Melvia Seymore added nine points with five rebounds and four assists.

As a team, Brevard shot 50% from the field, going 36-for-72, compared to Agnes Scott's 34% mark. BC drained 11 3-pointers while outrebounding the Scotties 54-43 and forcing 23 turnovers. Additionally, the Tornado bench contributed 41 of BC's 95 total points.

Brevard opened up the contest by outscoring Agnes Scott 25-9 in the first quarter of play. With the score at 5-3 in favor of the Tornados, BC ended the quarter on a 20-6 run to establish its early 16-point advantage. Brevard then outscored the Scotties by a 25-15 margin in the second quarter, highlighted by a 16-4 scoring stretch that made the score 46-20 in BC's favor at the 2:25 mark following a Washington 3-pointer. The Tornados would take a 50-25 lead into the halftime intermission.

Thompson led all Tornados with 12 points off four 3-pointers in the first half, while Williams and Seymore added nine points each. Parkins totaled seven points and two boards to go alongside Washington's six points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

Brevard had its largest point differential of the contest in the third period, out-pacing the Scotties 29-9. BC started off the quarter with a 12-0 run to extend its lead to a 62-25 margin with 5:55 left to play. BC went on to hold a commanding 79-34 lead in the third quarter as the Tornados cruised to the 95-59 victory.

The Tornados will return to action tomorrow on the road, facing Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
